Agreed - but make sure you cancel all direct debits and standing orders first !

not that easy markymarkD as they still have to acknowledge that the account is to be closed. Regular saver tied to premier direct. No DDs and SOs except one to go into A+L that I have cancelled

Shoddy customer service and not a bank to touch no matter how high the interest rate to get suckers in

I've banked with them for 9 years and never had any problems - but I didn't just join them to exploit an account opening offer.

    Maybe that's the difference?

well I am pleased to say that I have had my closing cheque for £27. I managed to empty my accounts in advance. The cheque contained a refund of the charge I received for moving cash from current to saver. LOL I have the last laugh now because I gained £90 from the referral process

I would have stayed with them if customer service had been good. I am quite capable of keeping several £ks in a savings account there but they lost my custom through sheer ineptitude.

They have still not started the closing process re my DHs 3 accounts. Recorded letter re closure was received by them on 8th june. Email 1 was sent to them 72 hours ago. e mail 2 sent 24 hours ago. No response from them at all

It is the sheer incompetence that I am complaining about

I have my minor moans and rants about A&L, but in my view, anything which inconveniences Daily Mail readers is a Good Thing.
Mortgage at outset (May 2004): £80,000
    Mortgage now (October 2007): £58,000
    Original mortgage-free date: May 2024
    Expected mortgage-free date: December 2014
    Projected interest saving: £21,100

The bank's rules or terms and conditions are not unlwful, it is the scale of some of the charges that has yet to be fully tested in court. This is because not a single bank has yet 'fought' a test case to determine this.

I've issued proceedings against the Nationwide for £1400, and a declaration that the charges are unlawful, and a declaration that any term allowing them to close my account without cause is similarly unlawful.

Lets see if the Bank steps down, cos I have nothing to lose - I already have alternate accounts elsewhere.

To close a current account, you can withdraw the money - every last penny - by transferring it to another bank.

But if it's a cash ISA you need to TRANSFER.
You must not withdraw or you lose your ISA status.
After that, it's irrelevant if the account's closed or not - it has a nil balance and it makes no difference to you if it's closed.

    Don't agree.
Certain accounts can affect your credit report.

This thread has made me feel sick

How many people complain about the 'unfair' terms and conditions when they sign up for an account?

That's kind of the point of the unfairness. If you did complain, the Bank is hardly likely to redraft a set of Terms and Conditions that are mutually acceptable. Consumers generally have to accept the standard form contract that is offered.

However certain contract terms may be unfair, void or unenforceable by law.
