  • Sorry, I should have specified. I meant you can't go overdrwn using your card or if you have a basic account. You can still go overdrawn with direct debits, standing orders and cheques on current accounts.xx

Also, peoples tax credits etc would have to go into a bank wouldn't they? They can't pay the nation ny giro so in a way people will HAVE to have banks.

I repeat - Oh yes you can ! - And you'll get charged too !!

Many/most retailers will not be going online to check every transaction. Most have a 'floor limit' which varies from store to store so in realitiy you can spend up to that floor limit at every shop/supermarket on the high street and go thousands overdrawn.

Often a wake up call for some.

They really do not have good customer service. My DH sent a recorded letter, received by them on 8th june re instructions to close his 3 accounts. The accounts are still open and live today the 14 june. He has sent them an e mail today and has cancelled any payments into the accounts.

I closed my accounts and am still waiting for funds to be moved out

Really poxy service all round from A+L

if there is not enough money in my account and i try to use my visa electron even for a small ammount it declines. Normally, it sets the money aside as pending and then won't let you use any more if you don't have enough in your account. There is no way in heaven or earth i could go into a shop and even spend £10 if the money isn't there and i don't have an overdraft.

If this have not happened to you yet, don't think that this can never happen at all. In fact this can happen with Visa Electron sooner or later. This can even happen with a cash card if it is used abroad.
  • It might happen for a small ammount one day you could be right but I am highly doubtful that I could run up thousands of debt with it if I don't have an overdraft.

Be as doubtful as you like - I've worked for two banks and have seen it happen literally thousands of times and for thousands of pounds too.

    Just be careful.

Has anyone here tried to close their accounts? They do not respond quickly to letters or e mails. Trying to get my money out of A+L is proving to be very difficult and I honestly would not touch them with a barge pole. I really don`t care what the interest rate is on their savings account etc. As far as I am concerned their customer service is APPALLING

I don't understand what you are talking about re problems closing accounts.

To close a current account, you can withdraw the money - every last penny - by transferring it to another bank.

After that, it's irrelevant if the account's closed or not - it has a nil balance and it makes no difference to you if it's closed.
