Expenses are irrelevant; so even if the OP's partner doesn't have any extra expenses then she is entitled to DLA - something I don't agree with at all. I know people who are on hrc and have no extra costs; but spend their money on treats. (they've boasted about this) I, OTOH, am on lrc and have loads of extra costs - I have to use my student loan to cover these.

Expenses are very relevant when this couple is trying to sort out a workable budget. What they don't spend on care needs can go into the household pot.
I agree it seems totally wrong that the taxpayer is giving out £140 a month to people who, although suffering from some sort of disorder, don't actually need this money to cope with what they have. It makes it into more of a consolation prize for being ill, than a necessity.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

I can only support someone if I have the funds to do so, that is the whole problem!!! I barely keep my house, and am unable to sell it, so where's the answer live apart for ever, let her have my children get a council house and not live together.
It sounds as though much of the reason you have having budget difficulties is down to your debt and, that being so, I'm sure you can see that it wouldn't be right for the Govt to top up your household income on the basis that you weren't able to manage your finances well in the past (I'm not being preachy about that - many people, including myself, have had debt issues at some point in time).
Rather than looking to see how benefits can help the situation, I'd say that if you really want to live together you'd be better off tackling the debt issue - perhaps look at a debt management plan or even IVA/bankruptcy if there's really no way out. If you have equity in the house, perhaps sell it to clear some of your debts.
A big part of being a couple is supporting each other emotionally and financially and in just about every other way. It's not always easy and that's why live-in relationships should never be entered into without a lot of thought and a lot of determination that you're going to be, and support, this person through the bad times.“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”

Well said. Prior to my illness I would never have imagined a large proportion of the expenses it seems to cause, so I would never assume that I can judge the costs of someone else's health problems (whatever they may be).0 -

Learn to budge then. After rent, I live on £80 per week and guess what? I manage and 99.9% of the time, I have at least £10 left over.
My parents (at one point) were only living on £19k per year with 3 kids and they coped.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked
