well the reason is because an old freind of mine works at the main office (in my area) and would be slightly embarrassing me going in signing on the rock and roll! as silly as its sounds
you should claim any and all benefits to which you are entitled- fresh air will not feed and clothe you or pay your debts back. why would someone who is apparently your friend be embarrased if you walked into the job centre? there must be other people working there, why can't you see one of them? your friend may find out anyway- what are you going to do then? deny it? lie? people are made redundant every day- you haven't done anything wrong! if it's such an issue phone DWP explain circumstances and ask to sign on at different office. job centre will help you find work and if you want to work on computers with computer courses. you have to contact the companies to which you owe these debts and inform them about redundancy. the redundancy payment won't last more than a few months, suggest you also contact cab, cccs or payplan.

    Just to clarify
OP is correct , redundancy pay is only calculated using service from age 20, statutory minimum is v low & if company has gone bankrupt only min will be paid.

The computer industry is not what it once was or many perceive it to be, which is the big kind of cash cow. If you want to work in computers and earn some decent money out of it then you are going to have to put some effort in and look at specialising in a certain area. It will probably take you a couple of years to get really going in your chosen area but it can all be done at your won pace and be sefl taught. However there is no substitute for experience. I've been working in computers for 13 years now and have seen how it has changed even in this short period of time. If i were you i would look at learning about databases, either design or admin or both. Within this field you would be looking to specialise in two software areas.
    Oracle or Microsoft SQl
MS sql will initially be more accessible but not quite as lucrative as Oracle. There are many beginners books and courses for MS SQL but a reasonable grounding in databse theory would stand in you in good stead.
I'm being brief here but if you have any further questions just ask away.

Thanks for taking the time out there, much appreciated.

You pay a lot of money for these payment protection policies, why don't you use them when you need them? You may well have to sign on to activate these policies so you will benefit 2 ways. Does it really matter what a friend may or may not think when comparing that to the stress of getting up to your neck in debt. Your debts may be at a reasonable level at the moment but this is where problems begin, robbing Peter to pay Paul etc & everything escalates out of control. Just ask some of the people on this site! You can make a choice now that could affect you for years ahead if you go the wrong way. This may sound like a rant but I'd hate to see someone get into trouble when there's an early way out of this.

Thanks for the advice, i dont have payment protection, well i did for a year or two then i suspended it as was costing me to much

You have to sign on, you've paid NI contributions all your working life to cover you for just such a situation.

Do you have any PPI on the loan or cc? if so, you need to tell them asap so that minimum payements can kick in while you are out of work - BUT you may have to be signing on to claim this.

check out this link for redundancy pay details....

I also drink and smoke, alot less of now.
who are your contact lenses with? o2optix have an offer where you buy 3 months worth, optician sign forms and you send it to them and they send you cheque for £12. Any use?
why were you/are you paying £30 for internet- see martin's article-
