In a rut, need some help

Hi,

I'l try and be to the point as much as possible.

I have recently been made redundant from a job i have been in since i left school (apx 11 years).

I currently have a loan with Lombard which i owe apx £5/6k and a Virgin Credit Card with apx £2300 on.

They are my only real debts, i just dont know where to turn, i am unemployed - earning no money and cant make any payments to the above.

I have thought about an IVA but i have no income so i cant apply for that so is the only other route to go bankrupt?

Any help or advice much appreciated, im now getting letters from these companys daily and i darent even open them now!

Thank-you

what are your prospects of getting a new job?
    are you gettin JSA?

write to your creditors and explain you have been made redundant (copy of documentation useful) and ask them to allow you to pay only a nominal amount (£1 per month). ask them to freeze interest. explain you hope to get a job soon and then you will start paying the full amounts again.

Did you not get redundancy pay? Would expect this to be a fair few thousand after 11 years in the job!???

Apply for Jobseekers, and look into temping agencies as well as bars etc. As said, contact creditors asap and let them know this is only a short period and you are hoping to get back on track soon x

The last few years of my job, i was getting more and more less intrested in it and dont rearly want to go back that kind of work.

Because i left from school i have no GCSE's etc or anything behind my name apart from vast experiance in the work i did do.

Ideally i would like a job that involved working someway in computers, i am looking into this but again not sure where to begin, maybe a computer course to get some qualifications etc might be an idear.

I am not claiming the Rock and Roll either and do not plan to..as insane as it sounds.

But i think that might be a good idear if i write to the companies involved and see what happens from that.

Thanks for taking the time out though mate.

    Any more suggestions greatly appreciated.

I'm still waiting for the redundancy to come through, thats exactly what i though after 11 years i should get a fair bit, but you cant claim redundancy until you hit 20, so i can only claim for 6 years...bummer hey!

I started when i was 16 you see till i was 26...so ten years hard work and i get 6 years redundancy.

    Thanks for your your advice

I'm fairly sure that's not right, there are a vast majority of people who work from 18 if not 16??? I'd check that out with someone, try Googling it. 6 years should pay something decent? Have they give you a vague figure, and how long it may be until you get it??

The letter i received which i beleave is from the goverment did state you can only claim redundancy from the age of 20, so i can only go off what that says but i will look into that further since you mention it.

Im not sure of a figure either for the 6 years i get a feeling it will be around £1500 to £2000.

I have been waiting so far for around a month for the money to come through, but over a week ago i received the final paperwork to sign, so hopefully that has finallised it.

I would like to state the company actually went into liquidation, so wether that has something to do with the redundancy starting at the age of 20 im not sure.

    Thanks again

Im fairly sure you are entitled to redundancy pay. Additionally, they should have ensured that they looked elsewhere in the business and that thee was no suitable role for you to fill, if not they are breaking the law there. Which wont count if the co went into liquidation, altohugh you can be a creditor if they havent given you what they should?

You say you are not going ot sign on? I wonder why not? At the end of the day you have to have some income to live off, and to pay your creditors, even if it is just a quid a month.

How are your job prospects? There are lots of free courses you can get on with PCs but most of them round my way in order to be free want to have proof of you claiming benefits. Also you can get free prescriptions, dental etc if you are signing on I believe?
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Yeah i am entitled to it but only 6 years of it because apparently it starts from the age of 20, even though i have been there from school.

I thought someone might ask this (why im not signing on), well the reason is because an old freind of mine works at the main office (in my area) and would be slightly embarrassing me going in signing on the rock and roll! as silly as its sounds..i know....

Well if i was to do what i have been doing for the last x ammount of years im fairly confident it wouldnt take long to get back in employment, but i feel i need a change of career, so a computer course to get the qualification etc might be the only way forward for me at the moment.

    Thanks for your advice.

there is nothing to be ashamed of signing on- I mean youve been made redundant!! Give yourself a break! Its not as if you dont want to work.

However, if you want to retrain, this can take some time, what are you going ot live on in the meanwhile?

In the mean time to pay your pills then you;ll need to get some sort of job and you may have to go and do jobs you wouldn't have wanted to do. Pubs, clubs even shops like Sports Soccer employ all the time so you might be able to get a job. And if you want to do a course you may find you need a part time job to pay for your time while your doing your work and paying your bills anyway.

Do you have any savings ?

A SOA would still be a good idea see if people can cut your costs back a bit especially while your going through this difficult time.
