forced to withdraw money from ATM - where does he stand?

my little brother went on a trip to amsterdam with his friends last week,

unfortunately he was mugged and not only did he have what was on him including his phone and ipod taken, he also was forced to go to the cash point and withdraw up to his withdrawal limit at knife point.

he reported the incident and has a crime ref number, but obviously this was all in amsterdam so

where does he stand on recouping that money? can he?

the bank are claiming no as he entered his pin but really he didn't have any choice in the matter.

With regard to the bank - is it worth complaining to the Ombudsman? Sounds like it might be to me seeing as he has a crime number etc - or try the helpful people in the weekend newspapers, they would take it up with the Bank for you.

Which part of this was the bank's fault - Unfortunately, he was forced to reveal his PIN number, and to withdraw cash, so it is a matter for the Police and Travel insurance - The bank have hardly done anything wrong on this occasion.

I still think it's worth approaching the Bank. I appreciate it isn't their fault - it is the muggers, but where fraud is involved the Bank cover you. Maybe this is different.

Might be worth checking the Criminal Compensation Board then, although I imagine they only cover the UK.

he is a victim of crime, not fraud, therefore the bank dont have an obligation here.

  • If you put your pin number in backwards it alerts the police straight away and they come and help you out, I seen this on crimewatch.

I don't really have any advice other than that

    No, sorry. Urban myth.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

I concur. Repeating this myth is very bad advice. It could lead someone to think that help is coming, when it won't be and could lead to false bravado.

Check urban myths (or email "tips") at www.snopes.com (and google them too) before forwarding or repeating them.

HA HA HA Genius, imagine if your PIN was 5885 everytime you went to withdraw money the police would appear.

You should have realised it was poop the fact that the police come out straight away and help
