Here's one recipe for it (tried and tested
) http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3727/red-flannel-hash
That looks like a nice one too, newlywed! Mine is slightly different, but very simple. You should have some cooked or roasted beetroot to start with, and some boiled potatoes, both cubed. Mix up the cubes and place them in an ovenproof dish, season with salt & pepper.
Next, fry a pound of lean minced beef in a large frying pan and add a chopped onion. Break up the pieces of beef, and cook it all until nicely browned. Also add some salt & pepper. Place the beef/onion mixture on top of the potatoes and beetroot in the oven dish.
Then, pour over single cream - don't drown it, I use about 200 ml I think. Bake in a medium hot oven until it is all very hot and the cream is bubbling.
The combination of cream and beetroot gives that 'red flannel' colour.
To serve - very important - put a bowl of chopped gherkins on the table, if you can get them the Polish or German style which are a little sweet. The combination of the red flannel hash with the chopped sweet gherkins is really good."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -
My plan last week went to pot, as I was ill most of the week and went off my food - a very unusual event for me. I've been off work for three weeks - my colleagues have been doing my teaching for me, the stars - but will finally be back on Monday. I'm now on medication for high blood pressure and back on anti-depressants, and I suspect more medication will be on its way once my blood tests are all in. However, it's a good thing the problem was picked up, and I'm pleased I did something about the depression, so in the end, getting flu may have worked out rather well, LOL. I'm not being ambitious with food for next week, though, as energy levels are still low.
Friday (tonight): I have a lot of chicken and potato left over from last night, so I'm doing a chicken and new potato curry with naan from a mix. Children can have something on toast if they don't want it.
Saturday: spaghetti bolognese (veg sauce for dd)
Sunday: roast duck crown with roast veggies & a cherry sauce (I have some tinned cherries); nut roast for dd
Monday: lasagne using the rest of the ragu (a mini veg lasagne for dd)
Tuesday: baked potatoes with some of the beef and prune casserole I have in the freezer, broccoli
Wednesday: stuffed baked potatoes with leeks & cheese & optional ham for the meat eaters, salad
Thursday: pan-fried mackerel fillets in moroccan spices, couscous with tomatoes, cucumber & peppers
Friday: sausage and mash (veg sausages for dd)Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000 -
Hi guys
This week we will be having:
Tonight: Butternut squash curry that I've just found the recipe for in a magazine
Saturday-Monday: at parents house so no cooking! Means I need to use everything perishable up in the curry though.
Tuesday: At a play (free tickets) so probably Cafe Rouge with a voucher
Wednesday: At a concert (£2 tickets) so probably Revolution with a voucher
Thursday: Depends what we have left in stores as probably won't have been shopping
Friday: SEEING NEW MOON EEEEEE so again, out for dinner, with the girls this time
Really want to see New Moon today but have promised I will wait until we can all go next week

Hubby always cooks on a Sunday (& sometimes Saturdays if I'm lucky
) & he's been after a recipe for a curry that a friend always makes at parties, anyway, he's got it now so we'll see if he can do as good a job as our friend Cath
Saturday – Fish Pie with peas & sweetcorn
Sunday – Cath's Chicken & Mince Curry, rice, Naan bread & sour cream
Monday – Left over Cath's Curry & Baked Spuds
Tuesday – HM French Onion soup & Pizza
Wednesday – Risotto made with quorn pieces, pepper, peas, mushrooms & chicken stock with Naan bread
Thursday – Tuna Pasta Bake & Garlic Bread
Friday – Gammon cooked in slow cooker, new potatoes, broccoli, peas & parsley sauce.
Like everyone else, I'm trying to empty the freezer to make room for Christmas so will be using some Quorn pieces I bought on a whim a few months ago in my risotto on Wed - hope it works ok
Never cooked gammon before but hubby likes it & it's on offer at the Co-op (half price) at the moment. They've got duck on offer too & half price chickens - worth a visit if you've got one local.
Have a fab week everyone x0 -

That sounds lovely thank you. Only DH likes beetroot though so it probably won't make it onto the menu plan
Although I'm now thinking about using different veggies & doing a similar thing ..... maybe I could rename it Green Flannel Hash or Orange Flannel ..... :rotfl:
Newlywed Thank you for the link. I won't make it (see above) but I like the BBC food site so it's given me half an hours pleasure surfing & getting ideas :T0 -
Wow, well done! :T You're giving me food for thought now, as my food shops regularly reach the £110-£120 mark for a family of four. I think I'll have a go at this when I get in from work tonight. Have you done this week's plan yet? I would love to see it for inspiration.
Thanks Jue, you see how easy it is to spend money in the supermarkets and it really does add up. My problem was that I would go in for say bread and milk, and come out spending £25 on lots of other goodies. Having a two-year old helping isn't the best way I know...she likes all the Peppa Pig jellies and "choc choc pwease mummeeeeeee" you get the idea, pester power already!
So I decided to be mega strict and from now on if it's in the fridge it must be eaten first before I buy anymore. I don't want to cut out all the treats, and financially we don't need to, but the waste and unnecessary food purchases have to stop.
Enough waffling....back to your original question....my meal plan looks like this:
Sunday: Roast Chicken, roast pots and parsnips, 3 veg, mini sausages and yorkie puds
Monday: Gammon steak, chips, garlic mushrooms and veg
Tuesday: Spag bol with garlic bread
Weds: Sweet and sour chicken and rice, DS has best friend coming for tea so kids will have chicken dippers, smiley faces and baked beans.
Thurs: Lasagne, green salad, garlic bread
Friday: Sausage, baked beans and mash (DS request, his favourite!)
Saturday: Pizza, hm potato wedges, coleslaw, salad
The majority of this food was already in the freezer or cupboards which is why my shopping bill was so teeny. I'm going to keep at this and will post my next mealplan once I'm inspired!"Put the kettle on Turkish, lets have a nice cup of tea.....no sugars for me.....I'm sweet enough"0 -

Hugs to everyone who's not well - I hope you all feel better soon!
tracyk - your chicken and mince curry sounds like something I had in a restaurant once. It was so nice I meant to try and recreate it, but I never got round to it and had forgotten about it until now. Thanks for reminding me - I'll have to have a go at that at some point.
My mealplan for the next week is:
Tonight - hm prosciutto (sp?) and mushroom pizza
Saturday - mushroom wellington (Boodle's recipe from last week, with a few adaptations) with garlicky spinach and gravy
Sunday - slow roast pork belly with apples, onions and butternut squash
Monday - Thai-style pork and noodle soup (using leftover roast pork)
Tuesday - butternut squash stuffed with savoury mince (from the freezer)
Wednesday - smoked mackerel and brocolli 'kedgeree'
Thursday - sausage sandwich and hash browns, with veggies of some sort
Breakfasts will be porridge with fruit, or hm bread with something on it (peanut butter, jam or honey, usually); lunches will be sandwiches (I'm hoping for a few rounds of roast pork sandwiches
), and I'll make some sort of veggie soup, too. Back after a very long break!0
