  • Hello everyone!

Hope you don't mind me bodging in but I would like to say a big thanks to Pp for this thread, it's great how you keep it going every week...and thanks also to all the contributors....your meal ideas are all fab! :D

There's a reason behind my madness....(promise!) for the last month I have been keeping my receipts from supermarket shopping, to try and work out how much I'm spending on food. I was really shocked to find that one week added up to over £100!! and thats for 2 adults and 2 kids, aged 5 and 2.

Major lighbulb moment dawned.....I sent the kids off out with daddy and armed with a pen and a large piece of paper methodically went through the fridge, freezer, every cupboard and the larder, listing out everything.

Then, using this thread as inspiration, I meal planned for 2 weeks using everything I already had in, wrote a strict shopping list for essentials only and kept to it. So my last shopping bill was £22, no extra food bought, and I feel better already!

Thank you everyone, for my computer generated kick-up-the-bum!!

    Tue: omelette and chips
    Wed: chilli wraps
    Thur: um....

    Sun: something with mince... :o

Lunches are: Baguettes with scrambled egg and bacon (sat), Smoked pork sausage and bean cassulet (sun), soups or jackets (week), and I have yet to decide next weekend's lunches. maybe hm pizza if I feel up to making dough.

Slightly better at sticking to the plans this week. Had 3 or so of my meals of the meal plan, and on the right days too...

Sunday: roast gammon with pots and mixed veg
Mon: sausage and mash or toad in the hole
tues: pie and chips with peas
wed: pork faggots with mushy peas, mash and gravy
    thurs: chicken kievs (with rice?)
fri: sausage and mash or toad in the hole (whichever wasn't mon)
    sat: dvd (pizza night)
    sun: roast chicken

All I should have to buy is some potatoes for mashing at some point mid week...

My freezer doesn't seem to get any emptier, but I'm really trying to use something from it every day! Here is next week's plan, it is not overly fresh and inspiring, but at least it is a plan of sorts. Veggies will be added according to what comes out of the garden.

    Today was: red flannel hash
    Friday: spicy fish/pasta bake
Saturday: hard boiled eggs in creamy curry sauce
    Sunday: tartiflette with brie
Monday: steaks and sweetcorn barbecue in fireplace, HM wedges, salad
Tuesday: potato and green bean curry
Wednesday: beef in black bean sauce, with rice
Thursday: prawns in pernod, with couscous (or jackets depending on time that day)
Friday: kale mash with smoked sausage
    Saturday: tortilla beany bake
    Sunday: sardine pizza

    Have a good week everyone!

Once again my meal plan wasn't fully followed. Doc decided I needed a treadmill test for suspected angina (probably with high cholesterol) so I've started reworking meal plans to cut down a bit on butter, cream & animal fats and to increase pulses & veggies.

This is next week's plan but still not yet fully worked over.

Breakfast: almost every day porridge oats not cooked but soaked for 1/2 hr in skimmed milk & blackberry juice with blackberries

Lunch: unplanned leftovers, soup from freezer, brown rice salad

    Dinner:
Mon: something with leftover frozen cooked chicken - was going to be chicken pie but now trying to do without the pastry
    Tue: fish chowder
    Wed: minestrone
Thu: chilli con carne (with added lentils, kidney beans & not much mince)
    Fri: potato & tomato sort-of-omelette
Sat: battered cod - perhaps w/o batter but this is a freezer item-to-be-used-up
    Sun: peanut & mushroom loaf

Wow, well done! :T You're giving me food for thought now, as my food shops regularly reach the £110-£120 mark for a family of four. I think I'll have a go at this when I get in from work tonight. Have you done this week's plan yet? I would love to see it for inspiration.
