some manufacturers don't recommend replacing gear oil, unless its been stripped obviously. my focus has a sealed for life gearbox and changing it isnt on any ford service schedule or even recommended in the haynes manual for it....work permit granted!0 -
Sadly "life" on cars these days means 10 years, lol. It could probably do with changing then.goldspanners wrote: »some manufacturers don't recommend replacing gear oil, unless its been stripped obviously. my focus has a sealed for life gearbox and changing it isnt on any ford service schedule or even recommended in the haynes manual for it.0 -

Meanwhile........
Hewhoisintheknoworwhateverhecallshimself - come back to me on the thread re the guy with the warranty/BER problem - I've information for them. Thanks.
Most modern synthetic gear oils that are "fitted" from original will exceed the life of the car. Changing drive shafts, or gearbox removal etc is the only good reason for changing the oil, more crap can be added to the system in topping up so should be avoided.
The level should of course be checked at service intervals or is there is an oil loss.;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

These synthetic gear oils will survive the life of the gearbox...... and that probably will not be that long. They are a pain in the butt with these sealed gear boxes - not a great idea.
If you are happy with black synthetic gear oil with the texture of tar, then that is fine...Genie

maybe on some but if the oil maintains it level then i doubt it would cause the gearbox to fail.
gear oil isnt under the same kind of stresses as engine oil or hydraulic oil, sometimes opening a sealed system can cause you more trouble than its worth.
now transmission oil on an auto would be different....work permit granted!0
