Didn't know that Chester - I did have my last order delivered to my nearest store as there is no delivery charge if you do that. I like having that option.
  • My wife has just experienced the same thing. When she ordered a coffee table she was offered a free Next Directory so assumed this was that - a free copy of the Next Directory. It wasn't until you go agree and go further that you start to get the feeling that you have not just registered your details, as you would with a normal online purchase, but have also opened a new credit account!
I checked myself and it does say in a link on their security policy that they will do a credit check. However, at know point does the main website say you are opening a credit account. Therefore most people will just assume it is the usual statement on data protection and internet security policies.

Surely this is deliberately mis-leading? This is the first shop I've seen do this, are there any others out there trying this decietful trick. Surely this should be banned?!

This is a quote from the page where you are offered the next catalogue:

'A £3.75 charge for the Next Directory will be invoiced at a later date. I understand that a credit account will be opened for me, subject to status. For information on the Directory Account, including how we use your information, please view the Next Terms and Conditions.'

I do agree that there is no way round this, but it is up to Next how they accept payment for goods. It's not quite underhand, but it could certainly be made clearer that you will have a credit account at 26.49% APR before you are directed to the following pages.

Unfortunately the old maxim of look before you leap comes into play here.

I don't understand how they "forced" her. Did she not get her debit card out and offer it to them as payment?

Edit - sorry, didn't see the online bit. There must be an option to pay another way?

I had the same experience when I bought a present online from Next, I was waiting with my credit card to pay and they just sent a mail saying I had £600 credit on my account. Not a problem I will just pay it off without incurring any charges but I can understand the temptation of £600 of free spending in Next at this time of year if funds are a little tight and it's very easy for young people to get sucked into the debt spiral in this way.;)

The present arrived yeaterday so I assume it's been posted to my account and I can now arrange a payment.

There was an option to have free delivery if you took the catalogue and you can stop future catalogues by letting them know that you don't want anymore.

Happened to me too. I wanted to extra long maternity trousers, but they don't do XL in store, so I ordered them online.

I put a few items in my basket, entered my name / address etc, clicked that I didn't want the catalogue etc. Clicked through to what I thought would be the payment screen and it was a page thanking me for ordering.

Only afterwards did I go back and properly read the T&Cs.

My own fault I know for not reading the T&Cs, but I do so much shopping online, it didn't cross my mind that it would be setting up a credit account.

Worse still, they upped my credit limit after just a couple of days!!
  • I hate next for this. I did open an account with them and did realise this but it was the only place I could get a certain christmas present a while ago. After I got my statement I paid it off, closed the account and vowed never to use them again.

I still occasionally look at their website but refuse to buy anything. Just more for inspirational reasons and then I find what I want elsewhere.
  • I have been boycotting Next for 4 years now due to their sharp practices. Even when I cancelled my account and told them I would never shop with them again they still sent me another card. It was almost like phishing, "here's a card let's see it you can resist temptation". Cut it in half and sent it back to them. Never going to shop there again.
