They cannot open a credit card without consent. There must have been a tick box, or a perhaps badly worded/structured pay options that led her to take the card. They can't open an account without a credit check and they can't do credit checks without permission.
  • It's not a credit card, it's just a credit account with Next - basically it's like having a Littlewoods catalogue or something. Then when you've had an account with them for 6 months you have the option of having a card that you can use in the store and purchases will be added to your catalogue account.

I know it's annoying though when you havent asked for it. As long as she pays it off when she gets the statement then she wont get charged interest and no harm done.

I don't understand how they "forced" her. Did she not get her debit card out and offer it to them as payment?

Edit - sorry, didn't see the online bit. There must be an option to pay another way?

They can't force you, as you can simply take your business elsewhere.
  • this is exactly the reason i don't buy from next. I went to order some sale bits off their website then realised they wanted me to have their account for the pleasure. No thanks - I had enough hassle cancelling Studio card's account.
loves how my "I've been censored" signature has been censored. LOL. Happy Christmas. :xmastree:
  • they offered me a catalogue in a next store

i was like 'ok do i pay at the till and you give it me straight away'
'no sir, you have to open a credit account with us and we bill it to that'
'erm....no thanks, i'll stick to just paying cash in store thanks'
'but you can still pay your account instore'
'no...its fine, i'll stick to paying you when i want something and taking it there and then, its fine'
*i then hear disgruntled employee moan to his mate about me something about hitting targets
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
BH is my best mate too, its ok :)

I trust BH even if he's from Manchester.. ;)

Next are well known for this. They where mentioned in a BBC report just last week . The same happened to me . If the tick box is there , it must be invisable :)

I tried to buy something in the Next Januaerysale on line. I think you could only pay by setting up an account with them, they had an offer at the time that if you agreed to take the catalogue you got free p&p, the cataloge cost £3.98 and the p&p was about the same. I had a problem processing the first order. So i phone and was told part of my order was sold out so i cancelled the whole order. I was very clear that i did not want the catalogue or the account, but was still sent one and charged. I phoned the told them they could collect it and refund the payment, they did refund the payment, the catalogue went in the bin. I've never touched them again.

I haven't had a card but noticed there is no option for debit/credit card instant payment online, so I now have an account. I'm careful to pay as soon as I receive the goods and am happy with them but it would be so easy to forget that you don't pay on order.

It's far from ideal but I really like Next clothes and there is so much more choice online than in any of my local branches.

I agree, they are !!!!!!s though.

You can order anything from the catalogue instore for free (furniture aside and £2 for next day delivery at home)

There is a quickshop option on the Next site in which the customer account number is the reference number for the card transaction
