My first towels were Bodyform, which were tapered a bit at one end, and had a big bump right though the middle, does anyone remember those?!

I sometimes wonder what planet my Mum was on because she knew I couldn't use her tampons but she never bought me any towels (apart from the first pack which I remember vividly)

It's a good job I used to work on a Saturday from the age of 11, so I was able to buy my own, but on the odd occasion, like someone else has mentioned, I'd have to use loo roll. :o
Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...
  • As far as I can remember nothing lol

She always had pads and tampax in the house for her obv so I just used them, I was quite late, I was 14 when I started.

Some people are showing their age on here! :rotfl:

We had 'bricks' when I was younger but didn't have to contend with a belt, thank goodness!

I'm sure we all walked like John Wayne though - there was nothing discreet about them! :rotfl:

I think the sanitary belts of my generation were considered a major breakthrough; I remember my mum telling me about the proper sanitary knickers she's had to wear and how light and "discreet" these new fangled things were!
  • My mum didn't make a fuss, got me some supplies in without my dad knowing (as he's one hell of a gossip and she knew would embarass me over it) and let me just got on with it. I couldn't have asked for more.

I think I would have been quite uncomfortable if someone had given me a gift to remember the day or made a big fuss about.
  • Yes, I think you're right. I remember my mother telling me about what they used when she was a girl: they were actually made of fabric and my grandmother had to hand-wash them. Thank goodness those days are gone forever
  • It was my fiftheenth birthday whn i started mine. Although i had obviously heard everything about it - i remember very vivdley crying on the toilet.

I told my mum about a week later and she just said oh, unlucky.

I had just turned 11 and never felt i could tell my mother so i used to try my best to keep it a secret. I used to love it when we got sample packs of towels from school, and when i went to friend's houses i would steal a couple of towels and take them home!! I used to plan ahead and take them from my mothers supplies throughout the month in the hope she wouldn't notice they were going missing. Also used to have nosebleeds on my sheets at least once a month

I am determined to be more approachable than her!!

Some people use washable sanitary towels now! I can't quite get my head round the idea but I'm sure they save money over a number of years.

Sounds like we are lucky these days though!
  • I was 11 when I started mine and I lived in a pub at the time. My step-sister was 2 years older than me and when she started her periods she was allowed half a cider and black to celebrate the occasion of becoming a woman! I was so jealous! I then couldn't wait to start mine so I could have half a cider and black! So when the day came I was so excited and told my mum and they gave me my cider and black and made me feel very special and proud. Ah bless. Seems ridiculous to think about that now but it was very sweet at the time! I was then provided with all the necessary sanitary equipment and feminax tablets and a cosy hot water bottle for the cramps. My mum was a star!

I had been given a couple of leaflets and when I started I knew where the towels were kept. Was too embarassed to tell mum, so just left a wrapper on my bed and she saw it and asked me. She checked that I knew where to find everything and form then I'd just pop whatever I needed into the shopping trolley, no discussion needed!

I liked it that way, I didn't want any fuss and would have been mortified if she'd told my Dad or bought me a gift. i just wanted to get on with it!
