Just added a do in my title which didn't make sense...

My mum didn't really say much, but handed me some horrid plastic knickers to wear at night... (fortunately, I don't even think they exist these days).
I have shown her where all my gear is kept, and suggested she takes calpol if in pain. Poor thing feels a little awkward. She didn't tell OH but waited for me to be back from work.

As long as she knows that if she wants to talk, you are there for her, then that's the most you can do really.

It is really embarrassing isn't it, but give it a couple of months and she should be fine with it.

She'll may just get on with it, some girls do. Just wait for the hormonal attitude now though, eek! :rotfl:
Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...
  • Aw bless her! I was so pleased when mine finally arrived (much avid studying of "Are you there God it's me, Margaret"!!) - I already had some pads in the house (Dr White's housebricks I believe...) so just got a very quick - "right, you're going to go through some changes now...use these" type speech - not the emotional moment I'd hoped for!!

Some of the posts above have cracked me up! It's such a big deal at the time isn't it?

OP - how old is she? If she's one of the first of her peers you could always explain the practicalities and maybe just get her a little box of chocolates or something. If she's one of the last (like me!) she'll get plenty of advice from her friends.

I remember asking her not to tell my dad! As if she wouldn't have and as if he'd care - he'd seen her give birth 3 times!!

I guess be ready with the pads and the ibuprofen.

I wish someone had told me:

    1. People can't hear the pads when you're walking - I was convinced I sounded like a collection of plastic bags walking along
    2. Saltwater gets accidents out of your knicks!

redd evil - tell me you're joking about the belts :)

mine couldnt care less, but then she was always drunk..all she said was get blood on sheets/knickers, and you wash them yourself...yeah thanks mum i did all that anyway, i ended up asking my form tutor, who explained it very sensitively, she also told me i wouldnt die from the blood loss :rotfl:
all my kids aged 10, 8, and 4 know about periods, and i started at around 10/11 years, so my nearly 9 yr old is rapidly approaching that age soon, ive told her that there is no shame and if she thinks she has to come to me and we will sort it out, then it will be choccys and a special treat
If we can put a man on the moon...how come we cant put them all there?

Before I started my periods my mother gave me a booklet from the doctors but actually explained nothing herself but as I was going to boarding school at the time I already knew what to expect, sort of.

When the fateful day eventually arrived my mum was a long way from home receiving treatment in hospital so I had to pop next door to the neighbour's to borrow money to buy towels. I would have been mortified to have had to ask my dad, it was just too horrible and embarrassing. Also, no-one ever explained to me what I needed to do with the damned things once used, I used to sneak out of the house under cover of darkness so my dad wouldn't see me disposing of them. I'm glad most young girls aren't brought up in such ignorance any more and can discuss all this with their mothers

ETA: Oh, and Red Devil's right about the sanitary belts. it wasn't until I'd actually seen one that I realised what those stupid loops on the towels were for. Hooray for wings!

My mother never talked to me about anything and just left some pads in my bedside cabinet:rolleyes:

I had an AWFUL time when my period started. They were so heavy and painful but I somehow just put up with it as I had no-one to talk to :(

If you have DD's PLEASE make sure you are there to talk to about these things as I would HATE any young girl go through what I went through!

  • Oh bless 'er. My mum had left towels in my drawer and given me a leaflet to read. I told her and nothing more was said.

When my neice started hers, I bought her a 'grown up' necklace and pendant (a celtic knot with whitby jet.) I wrote on the box that it was for a beautiful girl who was becoming a wonderful woman.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

    How sweet!

I know the belts existed but I'm pretty sure they'd disappeared by the tie even I started!

I think we have had a demonstration of one on that weird disembodied pelvis when we were 11 at school :rotfl:

I'm sure the sanitary belt I had came with press studs.
