Oh one thing I forgot to tell my daughter, when we explained everything, was, You dont need to be using pads, when your not on.
2 weeks after she'd finished, she was still using them,I just blank forgot to tell her that it usually only lasts for 5/7 days. :rotfl:0 -
I was on holiday when i started and i quetly whispered it to my mom and we went to the local shop for supplies i have always used tampons from the day dot i just dont like the thought of blood coming out of me i feel so much cleaner with a tampon. My daughter is 11 now and we have had the talk and she has a small supply of towels an tampons for when the day arrives .
Did any one elses DD think they would get a Carrie moment in the middle of school mine was really worried about it i cant believe old wives tales like that are still going round scaring young girls needless to say i have reassured her that she will only get a few spots to begin with and she seems happy with the whole thing now :-) x:jFriends are like fabric you can never have enough:j0 -
What a nice thread

I was 10 when I started and had not long had the talk at school which my mum knew about so I think she lucked out there
It was a sunday and we didnt have anything so my mum sent my dad out to get some. There must have been a reason why she sent my dad as he was probably clueless  but I cant remember why she did. Poor dad but I remember he did come back with quite a good selection:rotfl: From then on my mum would just buy my pads when I needed them.
One horror story I will never forget was going to a friends house for a big sleepover and waking up with my pjs and sleeping bag literally covered  I was so embarassed as I was still only 11. I didnt say anything to anyone, sorted myself out best I could to hide it. When I got home I ran to my mum and cried my eyes out. She thought I was over reacting at first until she saw my sleeping bag - i'll never forget the look on her face. Its weird as we talked about it quite recently and she told me she was pretty mortified by it
I only have a DS so i'll never have that fun...

My Mum gave me a booklet from Tampax aimed at young girls to read and treated it as a fairly negative event. She didn't explain at all about emotions - and neither did the booklet - and as one of my symptoms is to burst into tears, that might have been useful.
My friend said that in African culture a big deal is made about becoming a woman and that she plans to take her daughter for a grown up meal to celebrate. I like the idea of a girls only grown up event, maybe dinner, maybe lunch, maybe a musical - something grown up.0 -
Oh god..im reading this feeling like the worlds worst mother right now..I havent spoken to dd as yet but it has been on the cards for the last few days as keep thinking about it..i saw this and thought i will deff speak to her now. She is 11 btw so prob not far off.
When i started my dad was at home, his g/f was in the other room and everyone was asleep..i woke him to tell him and he sent me straight to her! i was given tampax which prob wasnt the best thing and sat in the bathroom for ages! i felt really grown up yet scared! I bought some pads myself the next day with a friend and went form there!
We have no pads in the house so must get some. Any ideas on the best way to bring it up with her..im useless with things like these..Thanks0 -

Oh yes, they make a huge and lovely fuss and bury her up to the waist in warm sand to ease the cramps. They have little rituals which involve all the women in the family, it sounds so lovely. :AGet to 119lbs! 1/2/09: 135.6lbs 1/5/11: 145.8lbs 30/3/13 150lbs 22/2/14 137lbs 2/6/14 128lbs 29/8/14 124lbs 2/6/17 126lbs

My Mum sat me down to give me the "birds and the bees chat". I was so embarassed I walked out of the room saying "I know it all" not wanting to hear it from my Mum.
25 years later when trying for a baby I had to ask my little sister about womens cycles etc to work out conception dates.
The moral of this story is listen to your mum.I am pleased to give hairdressing help or advice, but a thank you doesn't go a miss.

p.s. I feel so sorry for those who had to use their pocket money to buy tampons/the comfier pads/all their sanitary protection because their mums wouldn't. That is so sad. My mum got me proper nice pads and offered to buy me tampons when I felt ready to use them (she never used them herself but I thought it was a sweet gesture to recognise that I might want to).Get to 119lbs! 1/2/09: 135.6lbs 1/5/11: 145.8lbs 30/3/13 150lbs 22/2/14 137lbs 2/6/14 128lbs 29/8/14 124lbs 2/6/17 126lbs

I managed to miss the lessons at school, as I had rubella at the time; and my mother would have sooner sawn off her own leg than talk about something like that, so as a result, I knew absolutely zilch.
When the inevitable happened, a few days after my 12th birthday, I could only think that I must have somehow injured myself. I was terrified!
To add insult to injury, my mother told me off for making a mess.
I've always had a very negative attitude to periods (not surprising really I guess) and have always hated having them.
I'm so glad that I'm now of an age when I won't have to worry about it much longer. If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0
