*Ladies only*What nice things did your Mum do when you started your periods?

Mum made a little denim puch full of stuff i might have needed. The day i started (year 5..i was upset lol) she assured me everything was ok, and this was part of being a woman and gave me the little pouch thingy. That really really helped make it seem easier and not as scary, as she'd thought of everything beforehand. Lol i started earlier than both my sisters
but she did the same thing for them. Took me till i wa s17 to start using tampons..
Thinks its cos i started aged 10..so shoving something inside me didn't really feel right (sorry to be so crude)
Gawd, my periods used to be heavy and painful. Had a lot of time off in years 6-8 cos of the sheer amount of pain i was in and the heaviness (leaking onto school chairs=not good). Had mefenemic acid for a while but it settled down once i started using contraceptives. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. OMG :eek:Jojo_the_Tightfisted wrote: »Urgh. Flashback to being 13. Collapsed on floor in girls' toilets at school, agonising cramps, back spasms, vomiting, feeling like I was going to die. Had to stumble to Head of Year's office to tell him I was feeling ill. He took one look, worked out what it was and said 'do you want me to drive you home?'. He asked if I had anything, which I didn't, as I had been forced to deal with toilet roll since I was 11, except when I could nick something. He stopped at a chemist and came out with a packet of the poshest ones he could find. (Bodyform were brand new at the time) and a packet of paracetamol. In the car, he said that, if they were really bad all the time, I could go to the doctor and they could help me.
He dropped me off and spoke to my mum. She smiled as he drove off.
Once he had gone, she screamed and shouted and called me every name under the sun, including weak and pathetic and how stupid did you have to be to think that they hurt. She then informed my big brother and his best mate when they came in later that evening about how useless I was. Big brother left a big packet of things on my bed every 4 weeks without fail from then on.
I know none of this could ever happen nowdays, but I still rate that teacher highly for being so sensitive.
As a rule, I think men still are more sympathetic, even if they are a little embarrassed sometimes.
That is shocking and disgusting!! How dare your mum treat you like that
Glad your teacher and you big brother hewlped you through it though

I was totally ignorant to what was happening despite having two older sisters and when I noticed blood on my pants Mum just said 'Put that on!' nothing more!
I had Dr Whites bricks which I secured to my pants with the aid of a safety pin. Often if I could not find a safety pin and had to run for the school bus, the brick would be emerging from the back of my pants before I got settled on the bus:eek: and would spend the journey trying desparatly to get it back into place:rotfl:0 -
Things do seem a little nicer for girls nowadays .Fortunately there is more choice with towels and tampons. I think the best thing a Mum can do is be positive and make sure her daughter has everything she needs. Even if a girl does have bad pains then there is more help available nowadays.0

I got each of my two daughters one of these when they started their periods, as well as a trip to the cinema and a special dinner. We had a chat about the significance of starting periods, and the tone was pitched at quiet celebration.I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

Mum gave me a booklet to read when I was 8 (she stared at 9) and then some pads a year or so later. The day I started we were out visiting family...who had a white sofa! I was in and out of the loo all day stuffing loo roll in my knickers (I was 11). I told her when we got home and she just said 'Oh I thought you were ill'. Haven;t talked periods with her since, abd always used my pocket money to buy tampax (from month 2) as I hated pads so much! To this day she won't say 'tampon' they are just referre to as 'thingies':D:eek::D0
