hi flikkerty - you are supposed to sterilise the bottles until 12 months, because they have had milk in them and milk can be germy. but you don't need to sterilise anything else, although i suppose feeding bowls and spoons etc. could have had milky food on them - where are we supposed to draw the line? i don't sterilise his bowls, spoons or water cups.52% tight0

cheers! I put her Dr Browns in the dishwasher and then in a steamer steraliser, no probs so far so will carry on. I just put her feeding stuff in the dishwasher and apparently that is fine. Just to say that in hospital after my baby was born the midwife gave my daughter some aptamil because she was so starving and she wouldn't stop crying. After a few sips it seemed to satisfy her - where would i have been if she didn't have that? The whole ward would have been up all night.0

right, i promise not to post again all day :rotfl:
but i forgot about the colief. it's a little bottle of lactase enzyme, you can buy it at boots or pharmacies for £9.99 or get it on scrip. it lasts around ten days for formula milk, or 5 days if you're using twice the amount to make bottles up fresh, or add it to breastmilk.
the idea is that some babies don't produce their own lactase enzyme for the first 4 months or so, so they get colic caused by temporary lactose intolerance. my GP thinks most babies grow out of lactose intolerance by 4 months, and most of the rest by a year old. so instead of soya, if a baby is intolerant to lactose they prefer to put colief into ordinary formula. apparently giving soya leads to a slippery slope where the parent thinks the child is lactose intolerant for life and doesn't think about how to give them adequate calcium in their diets
anyway, it won't work if the baby is allergic to the protein in the cows milk, but if it's just the lactose they're reacting to, then colief can work wonders. i just tried cutting down on it for my ten month old and there's no way we can do it, he still needs colief and eating yoghurt etc. makes him ill too. same with my 9 year old, and most of the boys (?) in my family over the past 25 years or so. soya smelled awful back then, my brother is 26 and his soya milk was foul :rotfl:

I used to boil water and add an oz less than needed to bottle, then leave to cool. When baby wanted bottle i would boil a fresh kettle, add the oz of water to warm it up, then add the powder.
Milk isnt standing but it's still very quick to do.
As for sterlising, the HV said it was fine to stop at 6 months old, and we used the dish washer anyway which was just as good. My son is only 2 so it cant have changed that much.
I think we are all abit over cautious now days to be honest)"On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." My hero, Mr Steer.0 -
i have never even had colief suggested to me before! my son (6 next week) it took them 6 weeks of him bringing up all his milk to actually work out what was causing it and prescribed in SMA Wysoy after that. My daughter (15mths) lasted on normal formula for the whole of 7hours before they called the paediatrician to look at her and they then put her straight onto SMA Wysoy. I was advised to try breast feeding with both of them and they both reacted the same way as they did with normal formula milk.
My son still cant have anything with dairy in it without being extremly ill, whereas my daughter is now on cows milk and is absolutly fine with it.
With the next one (due end of july) i have been advised to put her straight onto wysoy as the chances of her being the same are incredibly high. I cant say im happy about doing so though, when i had my daughter at least i had the option there to try her with normal formula without me having to payout for it to find she couldnt have it. Chances are this next one will have it but i dont want to put her onto wysoy if she doesnt need to.
Thanks to the hospital taking away that option i now wont be able to find out unless i intend to take normal formula and wysoy in with me as well as bottles etc etc. Im just stuck in the situation now as to what do i do to be honest i can either
1/ put her straight onto wysoy
2/ take both normal formula and wysoy to the hospital with me
3/ breastfeed (which if she is lactose intolerant isnt going to be an option)
4/ take in normal formula and risk her being ill and not being able to give her any milk because they no longer stock it in the hospital even though it is a medical condition

Hello essexhoney
Not sure whether you've heard of it, but heres also SMA LF for babies who are lactose intolerant, which isnt soya based. My LO has had it on prescription from 10 weeks (shes now 7 months) and it honestly changed her completely over night. She slept through on the first night of having it which was a bonus!
It is pricey - you can get it from larger Boots or order from any chemist - about 5.99 for a small tub. But luckily for us both the GP and HV actually saw her having her screaming 'fits' and purple face from the pain at the surgery and they were shocked to find out she was like that after every feed, so we did a trial and then it was put on prescription immediately.0 -

That's because it's the easiest way - and it's a godsend at 3am, I had the bottle at the side of the bed and the powder ready to be tipped in - was bliss not having to go through to the kitchen and faff about with heating bottles!:jCross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. I think that is terrible - not everyone wants or is able to breastfeed, and it's a mother's choice to make, not the hospitals.
My wee one would have starved when he was born if my hospital had tht attitude - he refused to feed for 24 hours, and even then wouldn't suck - I had to feed him formula milk from a dropper.Cross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. somr formuales dont disolve perfectly at room temperature ??? my son was on omneo comfort which was quite thick and he had to have it warm to shake up and mix properly. my daughter thankfully has not such a sensitive tummy and we were able to mix up her bottles at room tempertature no probelm.
