I had even worse results with my varifocals from Glasses Direct. In fact they're useless. Never again. Yes I should have gone to...

Have been a customer of spec savers for years, worn glasses for over forty years , I know what I want, Last time was at Spec savers was told their 'Top Brand 'was the best in the business :D:D

I innocently asked . better than the Zeiss lenses I'm wearing ??

But even after that ...... was and am still happy with the glasses they supplied with
Zeiss lens costing the best part of £600 far cheaper than the ones at D&H/Boots
  • I got a pair of the Pentax varifocals from Specsavers last year, the reading vision is rubbish although they are ok for distance. I went back into the shop on various occasions and was told I needed to get used to them as it was the first pair i'd had. The last time I went back they said they would re-test my eyes but I would have to pay for the test ( I'm over 60) as your are only allowed 1 test every two years. I declined, went to Optical Express, got a free test and bought a pair of reading glasses. Won't be going back to Specsavers anytime soon.
  • I went to Specsavers for eyetest & new glasses on Wednesday & was very pleased with the service I received.

The tests diagnosed that I probably have the early signs of glaucoma & the optician is contacting my GP to get me referred to hospital.

I already wear varifocals & have chosen a pair with the £109.00 lenses. I am going to do the 2 for 1 offer but as there were 2 types of lens that might be suitable for me they said to try the first pair for a couple of weeks to see if the lenses suited me & if they do all well & good & if not they would change them to the other type & then I could chooses my other pair.

Don't think you can be fairer than that.

Might be interesting for people to realise that Specsavers own the rights to the "Pentax" spectacle lenses brand. It is completely meaningless - they can sell anything and call it Pentax. Its not a "proper" lens brand like Zeiss, Essilor, Hoya etc - they are just using whatever they can get cheapest and calling it Pentax. Always thought that was a bit dodgy.

How come I get Pentax lenses from my Optician!

This is where it gets complex. As I understand it (WishIwasaRichgirl can correct me if I'm wrong)

There is a Pentax lens manufacturer and a separate Pentax company, whose branding license has been bought by Specsavers - giving them the legal right to rebrand anything the wish as Pentax.
Beware the character seeking personal gain masquerading as a moral crusader.

    OK, some clarification required..

I didn't say you couldn't get proper Pentax lenses from another source, just that the ones from Specsavers are unlikely to be proper Pentax branded lenses in the way that most of us would expect.
Get your next "Pentax" lenses from Specsavers and see if they are the same as your current ones, particularly if they are varifocals.
That said, I'd be suprised if many other companies and Independants still use Pentax much in the future as it is now a devalued brand in most of our opinions.

Cheers for comments everyone (constructive ones anyway :T)
I've also been reading on the internet about Specsavers and the use of the 'name' Pentax & I think Tidus has explained that pretty well.

Anyway, thanks to flobyjoby I decided to 'put it in writing' to my SpecS branch. Fed up with going down there, seeing different people etc.

RESULT - message left for me yesterday (I was away) just got back to phone ringing and SpecS calling again, a third dispensing optician saying eyes to be re-tested, everything to be remeasured, I mentioned flobyjoby's comments about Pentax Independence vs Sola One HDV - she agreed, opinion the same as flobyjoby and she doesn't dispense Independence either!

First sign of enthusiasm I've had to re-test and probable re-glaze. Interestingly, I had printed off exactly what Specsavers offer by way of sorting out varifocal problems from their internet site. THIS is the service I should have been getting, though the staff have been pleasant, I think they were hoping I'd just 'lump it' and go away.

Hopefully, the range of vision will at least equal that of my previous Nikons lenses (even those have subsequently improved TWICE since I bought them 2 years ago). :search:
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

Oh no! Do please let me know what happened.

You sound very unhappy. I'm keen to know what ever happened to you, so I can make sure it doesn't happen again.

Well, went to pick up my Varifocals at the Fuengirola (Spain) branch of specsavers yesterday and I have to say I am very very pleased. Everything I read and heard seemed to indicate that the basic varifocals which were available on the free deal would be useless.

However, they do exactly what they said on the can and my vision has improved markedly - now able to read without perching on the end of my nose or removing completely.

Credit where its due. Didnt like the rather cynical sales technique being applied but no criticism about the end product.

    Well done
