No, but as I was on the phone to the fraud department who was checking my account today, and they didn't notice the fraudulent transaction from 3 days ago which was exactly the same as the one they stopped today, I thought it was a bit of an oversight on their part.

It was also an oversight on your part as well though? You missed it too.

Most folks carry at least more than a single piece of plastic, not to look flash but to have flexibility such as when a card plays up at the till.

I'd guess somehow off an internet transaction, the fraud man told me they can copy sites' pages when they redirect to the pay page. But there's also fraud in every corner - where I used to work I had access to thousands of people's credit card details, names, addresses, dates of birth, etc etc - I could have easily used them to my advantage - if I was that way inclined.

and therefore not the banks fault as you've given the details away
  • Scullster I didn't miss it - it was me who picked it up at the bank, and the fraud man who actually missed it, that's my point! He was going through my account, looking at my outgoings, telling me he'd stopped a transaction to 02 for £500 that day, and failed to notice one for exactly the same had gone through 3 days previously! Anywhow - I'm going back in to see them in a bit and will see what they say about not discussing my account with me on the phone too.

Lady Freda's card was compromised by Best Western's Internet (secure Site) in August 2008, fortunately, the card issuer sorted the problem very quickly.

Sometimes it is not the card issuer or the hloder who is at fault.
  • I didnt realise you could top up a phone with that much credit...

Banks will use a set of rules to look for fraud. I imagine they will look at things like how much the transaction is, if you have paid that person before, if a small payment is made initially followed by a larger one, if the payee has been flagged as suspicious before.

After evaluating all those, it assigns points for each of the rules it matches. If the points add up to a certain threshold then it will flag up as possible fraud and then they contact you.

Set that threshold too high and they will miss a lot of fraud, set it too low and they will be falsely reporting a lot of normal transactions as fraud.

In a trade off between missing some fraud (and the bank refunding the customer out of their own pocket) VS. the bank annoying their customers all the time by flagging lots of their payments as fraud, the banks will err on the side of missing some fraud but not p'ing the customer off.

It's a simple business decision for the bank. Once in a blue moon you get a customer who has inconvenienced so much that they change bank after fraud happened. But you can be sure a lot more people will leave if they have to tell the bank to let a payment through every month.
  • My partner's bank were so on the ball that they picked up a £5 cashpoint fraud at 2am - now that's good business!! They said the fraudsters start off that way and if they can get away with it they then take a large amount... good job they spotted it.
I have just returned from my bank, who looked at my account and could find no reason for them not allowing me to discuss it yesterday on the second phone call, and agreed these were unusual circumstances & that I was completely justified in filing a complaint. They were very apologetic - of course, it was not the branch staff I had a gripe with, they have been very helpful and I told them so.

OP they got into my account last year and got away with over £2,000 I am just glad I got all my money back.

If you want tighter security then you will find every transaction will be investigated. It has to be a happy medium.
  • I'm glad you got your money back too Hintza!! I'd rather they checked every transaction - if only they had the time, but imagine the employment they could create with that!! ;)

They can't check every transaction fully without asking your personally about them.
