Am I being over sensititve?

I've just sent a mail to my friends and family saying that this year we won't be sending Christmas cards I wil lbe donating to charity instead (I am thinking of contacting the local orphanage and asking if they will accept some stocking filler presents for the kids if they can give me the sex and age ranges of the children). I have asked people not to send us any either to save trees and their money.

I have had 1 cousin asking if I was 'taking the ps?'

Am I being a scrooge or miserable by not sending friends and family cards? If I am please say and I'll retract the mail. It's upset me a bit.

Not at all. You can always send them an ecard! It's more eco-friendly anyway. And good on you for thinking of the charities.

I won't be sending any cards in the post (well, 1 or 2) but bought up loads in the Boots sale last year for pennies so they will be handed out at work.

  • I am in your school of thought, and I think it's admirable that you are donating things to your local orphanage.

Can you say to your family that you will call them on christmas day instead? Afterall, it's all about getting in touch with family and friends. If they don't like that, then they are missing the point about Christmas cards in the first place.

How many cards are you talking about here? I bought 150 cards from M&S for £9.87 last week.

I think many people will find it offensive. Like you're saying "I'll think of the Orphange, but won't be thinking of you" - after all, cards are there to write a personal message to those who we are thinking about at Christmas. They mean a lot to many people (for many, it's the only contact they have with certain friends/family).

Donate to the orphanage by all means, but I would never do this at the expense of my loved ones - they will always come first.

good for you, you're thinking of those less fortunate, that's christmas spirit alright.
Got me thinking, may do the same.
I especially don't get why people send cards to people they see every day at work!!
  • I send very few cards and only to people I won't be seeing over the season at all. I wouldn't be offended at all if I got an email like yours. It's a crappy piece of paper that gets thrown away after a couple of years and most people hate writting them.

I would ask your cousin if they would prefer a piece of cardboard with a Christmas scene on it or to help someone worse off than themselves

I have done something similiar for years given money to charity that i would spend on cards. I find most people are quite supportive so much so now at work we don't give cards just make a donation to charity

I know what you mean... my thought process was that I will still continue to send birthday cards etc to everyone and have just ordered 6 for December via Moonpig.

Most of the people get presents anyway.

I was going to send everyone a Christmas greeting mail with a clip of me and OH having been 'Elfed' (some website where you paste your own head on silly dancing Christmas Elves)

It's not about spending the money or writing the cards, I just think that people get an awful lot this time of year (my family certainly do) and it would be nice to share the wealth.

  • I think you are totally doing the right thing. We barely send cards to our immediate family - let alone cousins!!!

I think you are admirable in choosing to do this and the person who asked if you were kidding should realise in time what a silly response they made to you. I can only assume that they are very young?

    Unfortunately they're not

  • btw IF you can't solve this issue with your family, try these cards:

    http://www.sreepurcards.org/

100% of the money goes to the people who need it. So this way, you can send christmas cards AND know that 100% of that money is going to good use. They are sold out for 2009 (great news!) but maybe for next year if some family members take too much offence in not receiving a card.
