Hello, I'd really appreciate some advice. One of my best friends is getting married later in the year, her hen night is in a few weeks and I would love to go. However, I've just been emailed the menu for the restaurant, we MUST have the set menu because of the group size and it is £57.50 (not including drink!)!!!:eek::eek:

We then have a booth in a private karaoke place booked for another £32, althought that is including a welcome glass of champagne and nibbles. I'm sure it would be a fab night, but the idea of spending at least £100-120 is turning my stomach at the moment.

I don't want to miss out (my daughter is one of her only 2 bridesmaids, thats how close we are) but I'm also not happy about spending this amount of money.

My partner thinks I should go and enjoy it as a one off exceptional expense, and thank my lucky stars it isn't a weekend away somewhere!

What does everyone else think?

Tricky one - I know that a lot of brides (or more importantly the bridesmaid organising the do) don't realise that not everyone can afford that kind of money. I'm actually getting married myself in August and my hen do is coming to £35 inc one drink, which I think is reasonable-ish. I am concerned that my hubby-to-be's best man is going to make the stag do really expensive as I know people like my brother will be priced out of it then...

I think as it is one of your best friend's, I would say go, but maybe don't drink? This would save the additional costs racking up. Or could you say to your friend that you can't really afford it but could just come for the karoke bit maybe? x

That's great Lamarsi, well done! Most of my debt is from uni so I applaude you for that! :T x

tis but a dream as of yet, i'm still a fresher! :rotfl:

mmm tricky one regards going out, personally i've missed out on so many things these last couple of years whilst i've been debt busting, for example i'm invited to a big party tonight but giving it a miss as it will cost big time, but personally i would go and as your oh says put it down to a one off as nessa for gavin and stacy says ' you only get married what, twice, three times, you want it to be special' I suppose you could ask if she would mind if you went along after the meal and cut the expense by half doing that, if she's a good friend she'll understand

  • Work is very quiet so I've not actually been in all month yet, so I don't think I will be able to put any money aside this month because I actually owe nearly £700 rent as well so need to pay that off before anything else of course. Hoping things pick up soon.

That is a lot of money. Couldn't you put say £10 a week away until then so it doesn't seem as bad on the night?

£120 is a lot of money but she is one of your closest friends I would go for it. She will only ever have one hen night (well i hope she does for your sake lol)
I should be getting married next year (funds willing) and I have already asked my brides maid not to organise anything that could price people out.

Thanks for that lamarsi, it made me laugh!:rotfl:Need a laugh after the shock:eek: I honestly thought I would be sick. I really am taking this money saving lark seriously!

jojitsui definitely will tell my friend I can't afford for her to get married again:rotfl:. Hope your hen do matches your budget and is a hell of a lot of fun too! I think it is hard to enjoy it when you're worried about the cost. Unfortunately the do is only a few weeks away, menu only sent through today!

Anyway, quick update - after panic, went on toptable and low and behold, found the same restaurant with 3 course set menu plus cocktail for £27.50 - £30 less each than what they quoted us!!! Plus the cocktail!!! Emailed organiser, was worried about upsetting her, but she was really pleased that I'd found something much cheaper and is trying to book it now!:T:D:D:D:T She's had a hard time organising it and is about to emigrate too so has a lot on her plate, and a few other people dropped out because of price.

I won't count the £30 saving though as it means I can afford to drink now;)!!

I've made all my payments for this month now. Found out I'd forgotten to pay one of my credit cards last month because the bill never arrived :( So I had to pay nearly £200 for that and with Christmas I've calculated that I'm now about £200 short this month. I can't make up my mind wether to get the money off my credit cards temporarily :( or ask my mom if I can borrow it. At the moment I'm leaning towards credit cards and hoping I can sell some bits on ebay and that the money from my artwork and quidco comes through before the end of the month but I'm really miffed that I'm going to lose a lot of ground on what I've already paid :(

That's fantastic museumworker! See it just goes to show what can be done with some MSE thinking! Now you can really enjoy your night! :D

Awww Amatheya81, that is a pain...I think I'd be tempted to ask your mum if you think she'd lend it, as would be no (or less) interest than putting on your credit cards. You will get there, don't worry, is there anything else you can sell to make the difference up? x

Amatheya81 - That sucks. Have done it before myself.
Can't you set up a DD to pay the min amount so it doesn't happen agin? You can still over pay it just means you never miss or give a late payment.

I have yet to do any of the things on my list (except build a snow man) so I am walking away from the computer. MSE is soooooooooooooo addictive and the forums are sooo intersting
