Showing 18 films to underage children at school

When I was 17 I had a job in a cinema, and I had to have written permission from my parents to say it was OK for me to go into 18 cert films to clean at the end, or to seat people at the beginning, I rarely saw any of the film in this role and I was nearly 18 anyway, and so it seems as if in this situation the teacher was very wrong, if not negligent to not gain prior permission. I think I would go back to the hod and explain what has happened since, and say you would like the head teacher to be made aware of the situation as it really is most unprofessional of the teacher. I think he needs to be made aware of the repercussions of talking to the students about his work issues, we all know what kids are like and how things get spread like wild fire, what was he thinking?
He may well be a very good teacher in other ways, but he needs to realise that he has over stepped the mark IMO.0 -
My husband and I in our late 50s chose not to watch that film as we thought it would give us nightmares; no way would I show it to a twelve year old and I think parents' permission should have been sought before doing so.
I wouldn't even show Schindler's List to a twelve-year-old, or even a sensitive fourteen-year-old, and it is my favourite film!
I can't imagine what the teacher was thinking of.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
I remember when I was at senior school we had to watch Threads _ can remember certain parts even now and also we had to watch Equus.
I don't feel that they should be able to make a decision like that without referring it to the parents/guardian.January Grocery 11/3740 -
I used to work in childrens homes and we had to be very strict regarding age certificates.
In fact the National Minimum Standards which come under the Care Standards Act 2000 (ie an Act of Law) clearly states that 18 certificates are not appropriate within a home where there are younger children.
Therefore, in this situation we basically were in loco parentis yet we had strict guidelines that we had to adhere to.....so why is the education system allowed to be different.0 -
that film made me feel sick when i watched it and im 26! I cant believe they showed it to kids so young!is officially a GLEEK0

I remember being shown Roman Polanski's Macbeth when I was 15. That was graphic enough. At least it was relevent for my course though.
I don't see what benefit showing gruesome clips of the Passion would have on any child. Particularly 12 year olds. It is not the way to bring religious awareness to children (of any denomination) and is highly inappropriate."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
I wouldnt let my son watch that film when he was fourteen! I saw it and although i think i am broadminded (there were other 18 rated films i let him watch) i wouldnt include that one. I found it disturbing as an adult!
I am wondering - which part of the curriculum does this teacher think its covering? and if i was examiner - what the hell would i think about answers quoting this film - cos its got to stick in the kids minds!
also - if the teacher told them to go to back of room and cover ears and eyes - he/she had to know it would upset them! then to have a hissy fit in another class? hmmmmmm is this person sane? or in other words - should they be teaching RE? i would be talking to head teacher hun. then if i was fobbed off - the press!!0 -
It doesn't sound quite right to me, this story. The OP wasn't given any forms to sign giving permission to allow her child to watch it but yet knows all about it, which film it was and which bit of the film was shown etc etc.
That information can only have come from the child and I know what children's factual event relaying is like.....not usually how it happened.
So, the OP asked the head what was happening and the head went to the teacher, Well, if I were that teacher I would be thinking, "am I in trouble here?" and I would say to the head "Sure, it was that film but only that bit".
No matter what was said to the teacher by the head, I am sure the head would just tell the parent, "Sorry, its been dealt with".
As for the rest of it...what? Child gets accused of this and teacher says that and everyone thinks what? and blah blah blah. Is that something else that comes from child?

Children get facts wrong, they exagerate and they make stuff up. They forever tell the parents "Teacher x did this" trying to see what will happen and how far boundries can be pushed etc.
I have no idea who made this story up all I do know is that it makes no sense.0
