Ethernet port stopped working and subsequent problems

  • Thanks for the suggestions, in answer to reinstalling windows I could probably do that but I wouldnt want to lose all my files, which I guessed I would do if I did that.

Wiith regards to Closed's question about the ADM511.sys, i did the search as suggested and the following files came up ADM8511 (twice) and admjoy.

FYI the following error message was the last one I wrote down recently:

    STOP: 0x0000008E
    (0XC0000005,0x8050924A,0x9C4524FC,0x00000000)

With regards to the Powerline adapters I have tested them and they are working fine so I still believe the issue to be with the faulty ethernet port. I have though tried rolling back the software, uninstalling/reinstalling all with no joy

Are you using a network card on the motherboard, a pci network card, or a usb - ethernet adapter - if the latter, you'd be far better off with a normal network card which don't cost much - are you sure your existing card is faulty, are all the drivers installed.

but make sure you have the latest ADM8511.sys driver in the meantime. It's the usb adapter driver that is crashing.

Why not swap the ethernet card to another free PCI slot? 5 minute job, cost is zero.
If no luck, change the ethernet/network card-cost, about a fiver.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks but the USB Adapter driver appears to be working fine, the problem appears to be with the PCI network card I am pretty certain it is faulty, as far as I am aware all the drivers are installed and everything i have tested on other machines doesnt work throught that port.

Sorry to sound stupid but how will I get the latest adm8511.sys driver?

How easy is that to do? I have installed RAM in the past but thats about as far as my computer expertise goes

It's (if anything) easier than installing RAM, as you don't have two clips to open up. In every other respect it's the same principle-remove cover/side panel, remove existing PCI card from slot, insert new one.
You can see from the back of your PC if you already have a spare PCI slot, as this will be covered by a blanking plate.
Obviously if you have a laptop then this does not apply.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

The driver mentioned in your BSOD is for the usb adapter, so it might appear to be fine, but the driver is crashing the system - if the adapter is branded, go to the manufacturers website, or googe for adm8511.sys or admtek, or go into device manager, and update driver.

If the existing card is faulty, what does device manager say about it's status?

Zonealarm can sometimes cause some strange symptoms with network cards.

Thanks I have updated the driver for the ethernet adapter and it appears to be working fine, although i havent used my machine much over the last few days. Thanks for your help on that.

I may still purchase a new laptop as I am conscious that the prices are going to go up with the VAT rate increase and also keen to make the most of the says as well as the fact that a family member is suffering from poor health so a laptop maybe more useful for them to use.
