The banking system in this country is underpinned by the government if there was no government support then it would be bust.

The government are basically telling the banks how and what to lend. Its a game of cat and mouse. The banks know they would be bust with out the support of the government but they know the government knows they cant allow them to go bust.

The banking system as it is at the moment is not my idea of capitalism

You're getting very close Emy but you've got things the wrong way around again.
You know there is a problem, but you can't quite put your finger on it.

Realising that the banks are in charge, not the government, would be a good next step.

Only what I saw on The Apprentice last year, when both teams were given the task of trying to rebrand Margate for tourism. The sun hitting the beaches and buildings on the 2 days of filming made the place look ok on the TV.

Thanks, I did actually see that programme (fan of the apprentice) although I confess that I have forgotten most of it, now that you have reminded me I think I will have a look on the BBC website and see if I can find the archive of that prog). 'Boarded up' rings alarm bells

Sounds very much like the 'Spanish City' in Whitley Bay that I used to love when much younger

Is it greedy to want a 'dream family home' or have I missed something from the article
I don't want a dream home for my family. Just a nice home in a reasonable area, which is exactly what we got. We could have borrowed a lot more, but chose not to.

Ryarsh is a nice village in as much as Tonbridge & Malling council have so far not ruined it with over-development, like so many others in the area. It is somewhat lacking in basic facilities, but full of wealthy types who don't care about the lack of a shop.

In a lot of areas, house prices have gone down to 2003/2004 prices, so not necessarily.

Also, there's the road ceiling price: to take an extreme example, if she'd bought a corner house on a council estate, installed granite worktops, gold taps and a swimming pool, it would still be worth pretty much what she'd paid.

    This is often true.

Lets not forget that she first tried to sell in 2007(peak market) for nearly a 40% gain. I suspect she chased the market down. If trying to sell at a 40% profit from when she bought is not greed then I do not know what is.

I suspect if she had tried to sell at 700K in 2007 she would have probably have got at least the 625K she is looking for now.

I think article should be read by all those who believe that their house will always be worth what they paid for it or what they MEW'd it up to.

    From the same article :-
The difficult conditions in the mainstream market are behind predictions from Savills, the estate agents, that prices may fall again next year, by an average of 6.6 per cent

Her prospects of selling aren't likely to get any better.

I lived there in the late 50's/early 60's and daughter visited last year (work related). The area is great, the town is not - especially in summer. "Visitors" tend to leave their manners and common sense at home. Very run down and seedy, she said she didn't feel safe at night.

Have a look at the villages though. Westgate, Birchington etc. Broadstairs used to be good, not sure what its like now.

For what it's worth, a 5 bed Victorian mid terrace sold for £900 in 1968 (none similar on sale atm) and similar properties in LS6 were going for over £2k in 1967.

im surprised actually at the pictures, i was expecting something a bit more 'wow' if she spent 200k on it, but its fairly average, although nice. i suppose you wouldnt need to do anything.

but someone said here that shes had it as a family home for 5 years so obviously wasnt doing it for investment but thats not quite the case because she tried to sell it in 2007, so in fact the 'family home' was only for 3 years at max depending on when they actually split, most of that time must have been spent doing refurbishment

i also believe that not all that extra money was spent on the home, i just cant believe it would have been

i used to mew a lot, ive sort of learnt my lesson although did ring the bank the other week to get some more money for a kitchen. they said we couldnt afford it and in a way im relieved, i must learn that if we wait for something its not the end of the world but its a hard habit to get out of

margate town is v v cheap but you would have to wait for it to 'pick up' as has been planned for the past 20 years. however move a bit either west or east, to either westbrook, westgate or cliftonville and you would pay a bit more but be in a much nicer location
