No you're not being thick. :) Someone else asked the same question here. For traybake recipes have a look at this thread: Traybakes

Bear in mind that pregnant women can't eat certain things - soft cheese, pate, peanut butter, fresh mayonnaise.......

smoked salmon sandwiches are best made of thinly sliced, buttered wholemeal or wheaten bread, sprinkle with black pepper & squeeze a little lemon juice over the salmon.

also how about buying a piece of ham (Nigella has a good recipe for baked ham) and cooking it before your party, so you can slice it thinly for sandwiches?

chocolate brownies are a good thing to make - everyone likes chocolate!

or how about cheese scones? same recipe as regular/fruit scones, omit the sugar & add 2-3oz grated red cheese, then bake as per regular recipe. Scrummy when served slightly warm with butter!

thanks! Yes, know about pregnant women - my S-I-L is driving me crazy! She wont eat the cream cheese, nuts,or the salmon or crisps or white bread and she has an aversion to chocolate at the moment! maybe I will ask her to bring her own food LOL!

Thanks for your suggestions, I think I will definitely make the cheese scones and the tray bakes and actually pretty much everything everyone has suggested!

When making sandwiches try to buy bread that has square shaped slices, take two slices at a time out of the packet and open them out so you get a matching pair, then your sandwiches will be much neater. A medium sliced loaf will usually make 9 rounds of sandwiches. although sometimes the first and last slice are a bit dry, so you might not want to use them. Have a great time.

thank you! having a lovely day relaxing - hope the weather on Sunday is as good as it is today - otherwise tea party will have to move in doors!
  • Hi I have a friend visiting from Canada and was going to take her for traditional afternoon tea, however I am now thinking that it would be nicer for me to make afternoon tea from her.

So could any of you lovely old stylers suggest your afternoon tea recipes especially for cakes and sweets that can be frozen or that will keep for a few days.

cucumber sandwiches spring to mind, along with little iced cakes or a victoria sponge cake. or maybe scones jam and cream.
in reality in my house you would get - chicken and ham paste sarnies, welsh cakes or ice cream!
    I dont really DO tea!
  • I'd be putting scones on the menu, and some kind of variation on a Victoria Sandwich-type cake - perhaps chocolate, lemon or coffee/walnut perhaps. Maybe some meringues or choux buns, and some Twinks hobnobs. That would be my spread for cakes, but I'd also be doing a few dainty sandwiches too. I hope your friend enjoys whatever you decide to make and that you have a lovely time together!
