  • Thanks for the comments but simply moaning about gas engineers and asking silly questions (post 17) doesnt help. Also asking people on this forum is me taking steps - irresponsible would be not doing anything.

I'm asking for advice so unless you know a Professional who is FREE then that isnt an option either. Please try and appreciate what i have said.

Believe me i'm not leaving it this way intentionally!!!! if i had the money i would have someone here tomorrow believe me.

I'm just asking advice so if your advice is to get a professional then thats great and i will BUT i need to save the money first - which then led to me asking how much it costs etc

Thanks Superdood - i will check this out with the council in the morning. A crisis loan seems like the only avenue at the moment.

Thanks everyone for the comments but do you know if you can claim on home insurance as this may be an option??
  • In addition to this the hot water doesnt stay on for long now either - probably about 15 seconds and then goes cold - then hot again and so on

forgot to mention I spoke to someone earlier today who was kind enough to mention that there may be a fault with the fan not circulating air?

Basically you have choices here to ensure your safety

    1. Get a gas safe engineer to check it
    2. Turn the appliance off and do not use

If you can answer the following questions for me I may be able to offer further advice #
1 is it your only gas appliance
    2. if not does it does this regardless of whether you are using any other gas appliances in the property at the same time
    3 is there any smell

I would suggest that you call 0800 111 999 as it may be a pressure problem in the supply to the property or at the meter both of which is a gas emergency it is free call out to ensure that you are safe and if it is a boiler fault then you would know for definite so please call today for your peace of mind and safety.
I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.
  • Thanks lemontart

1 - we have a gas hob and cooker
2 - it does this regardless. Hob works fine all the time. Boiler seems to be the only problem.
3 - no smell at all. When we had the cooker done the gas flow was fine according to the installer.

One thing someone said was that (excuse me if this doesnt make sense but i'm no expert at all) - "the boiler is a closed unit and the gas is taken out through the flue. There is a fan inside the boiler unit that pushes this air/gas out but that could be broken meaning the boiler wont ignite"

If i completely seel the boiler tightly with the screws etc then it doesnt ignite at all - but when we leave a small gap in the side by loosen a screw it ignites.

Does this make any sense lemon???
  • i know money is tight but you need a gas engineer that knows what they are doing.
Your cheapest option may be a British gas fixed price repair. There are things on the boiler that need checking.
  • Scrub the fixed price repair, just saw the part about hot water. Let me guess you live in a hard water area?
Are you on tax credits or any sort of benifit? You could try rip off warmfront for a grant for a new boiler.
  • cheers bambibashercol - i spoke to the council and they wont help, home insurance doesnt cover it, and so i asked my mother for help. She has very little and lives in a 1 bed flat but said she would lend me the money.

However - this morning my wife got a call from her bank asking if she wanted to top up her loan - we've spoken about it and this is the most sensible option so we're going to go for that.

I'd just like to hear peoples thoughts on it thats all :)

Isnt it a p*ss take that people who work hard cant get F... all when they need help but those who live off the state get everything!!!! I mean we're going to need about £1k (i think) which will take about a year to pay off.
  • sorry bamb didnt see your second reply - no both work full time (recently had pay cuts too) so have to do it ourselves
  • ......oh and i live in Cwmbran South Wales
  • I know councils in the midlands have been offering 0% loans for home inprovements.
You may be better going to the cab offices because they know better what may be available in grants.
O and best of luck with it.
