Pilot Light keeps going out

Hi all hopefully someone can help.

We have a pretty crap boiler in our house - a Ferroli Falcon II - we've had a few problems with it and think this is the latest one that may be linked into others.

The current problem is that the pilot light goes out after about 10 mins or so (differs each time) and we have to reset the switch for it to turn out. The radiators and water runs hot but then as soon as the light goes out theres nothing oviously.

This has only started happening recently and this is a new problem to the boiler.

Any ideas on how to fix it or what might be wrong with it????

There are other things wrong with the boiler but i wont go into them yet (best one being when the front case is sealed the boiler doesnt ignite at all - we've had to leave a slight gap by loosen a screw so it ignites at all)

Cheers

My advise is to get a Gas Safe engineer in and have it serviced immediately.
If as you say you have broken the seal to the casing then you are running the risk of carbon monoxide leaking into the house.
You can't smell it but its deadly.
Act now before its too late.

  • Thanks for the quick reply - we had an engineer come out last year and we set up carbon monoxide monitors (3 in total around the boiler) and he said he couldnt quite work it out but came back the next day and said all i can say is to keep the casing open a bit.

Obviously this is a short term fix and we dont have the money to buy a new boiler or even pay for someone to come out.

i'm checking the boiler as I write this and its gone out again.

I wonder why it keeps going out all of a sudden as it did this maybe once in 6 months before this week,

    Complete Assumption Here:

1> the gap your leaving in the casing is sufficient to allow a breeze to blow out the pilot light.

2> the gap in the casing is affecting the pressure in the chamber either causing a safety cut off feature, or allowing the pilot light to extinguish.
  • that boiler is dangerous it wants shutting off untill it can be repaired or replaced

It possible that the pilot flame is not causing the thermocouple ( the pilot flame should play on it) to keep the gas valve open .
    Possibly a blocked jet.

I can only urge you to get a qualified person to have look at it.

BTW Assuming its one of these its electronic ignition and does not have a pilot flame???

  • thanks for replies

its the Ferroli Falcon II - thats the exact manual i have - and automatically ignites. I had a new Air Pressure Switch fitted previously and this seemed to work for a while but not anymore.

I take on board the point about the gap being left causing a breeze but its a large pilot - kind of like a board of flames.
  • Also....sorry it is that Falcon II boiler and on that manual is page 40 there is a Key - in the first box it shows number 2 where the boiler shut down warning.

Thats the light that keeps coming on.

Thats not the pilot thats the main burner.
    You really need and expert.

  • i agree - the boiler has been nothing but problems for about 2 years,

Based on what i've said how much would a new boiler be???

would it be easier for someone to just take the Ferroli Falcon II out and replace with a different boiler???

i have just got rid of my ferroli boiler (thanks god) nothing but trouble since installed. we bit the bullet and got a new boiler and went for the worcester bosch cdi30.

only had it a few days but its already so much quieter and energy efficent than the crappy ferroli.

we also had a similar problem with casing with it being if main outer was on we couldnt get hot water. bizarre and obviously a well known fault as when our plumber went to get a part for it, bloke said take the casing off and see if it works lol
