is the boiler your only gas appliance, does it happen just when the boiler is on or when you have other appliances in use,? as it also may be gas pressure problems either to the unit or to the property a gas safe registered engineer can test that for you but if it is a gas pressure problem due to the meter you will need a metering engineer from National Grid or appropriate net work, 0800 111 999 as pressure probs to from the meter is an emergency job.
I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.

word of warning many gas engineers are only doing boiler swap outs/replacements because it is high profits.
eg boiler cost 900 pound they double it and charge 1800 including installation.

Ask cost of boiler and cost of labour. Standard swap out should be half too one days work.

My advise is to get a Gas Safe engineer in and have it serviced immediately.
If as you say you have broken the seal to the casing then you are running the risk of carbon monoxide leaking into the house.
You can't smell it but its deadly.
Act now before its too late.

    Where will it come from..?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

The unit is designed to be sealed, air is drawn in from the outside by the flue and expelled through the same co axial pipe.
If the unit is left open to the room the the products of combustion including carbon monoxide can leak.

as we cant afford it unfortunately we're going to have to take the risk as its been this way for a year and the multiple carbon monoxide sensors around the thing dont go off.

Is this something we could claim on our home insurance?? the thing is aswell will they class it as broken and replace???

Are your carbon monoxide sensors going to save you from a gas explosion when the main burners have gone out??

  • All i can add is you should contact gas safe about the gas engineer you had as he needs looking at. There is no way on this earth a gas engineer should be advising to use a room sealed appliance with the case off. The appliance should of been isolated and warning stickers put on the appliance. He should of then issued you with a warning notice.
  • Hi,
My OH is a gas safe engineer but even so wouldn't give advice online, especially if you are attempting to fix this problem yourself. The ONLY sensible advice anyone can safely give you is to get in a gas safe registered engineer to sort the problem out for you, which will cost quite a bit but is the only option open to you, And without being there to see the problem no one here can possibly tell you what is wrong and how to fix it, even if they are a qualified engineer, it's just guesswork and time wasting and potentially endangering lives. Ask a professional.
If the worst comes to the worst and you need to have a new boiler my OH swears by worcester for reliability.

You are being irresponsible, you may have little regard for your own life but what about those who you live with, and your friends and relations who will have to pick up the pieces if the worst happens. Sorry if this sounds harsh.

    Forgot to ask,
If you need a new boiler and can't afford one have you checked with your local council if there are any grants available to you, sorry I don't know your particular circumstances and there is a strict criteria for these grants but I thought I would mention just in case, these grants as far as i'm aware are only available for the elderly/disabled. Or if you are on benefits/low income you could be eligible for a crisis loan/grant from the social security fund to help with the cost of repairs?
Most councils will offer interest free crisis loans if you are in severe need of a new boiler and have no other choice, sorry I cannot condone you using an unsafe boiler at all.
