Cleaning roasting pans ...

I tend to cook roast veg. every week and am getting fed up with having to throw away roasting pans that I can't clean. Having used the various "power sprays" on the market, they are totally useless and a waste of money. Non-stick pans don't seem to keep their coating for long ... especially when I've been scrubbing away for hours. ::)

Anyone any tips on getting rid of all the "gunge" ???

Thanks in advance.

  • Had this problem myself. I soaked mine overnight in a solution of laundry detergent (Tesco value) and water. This loosened everything. A little gentle scrubbing with the green side of a sponge scourer got it all off and made it shiney and clean like new. ;D

I use oven cleaner, which seems to do the trick. I give the tray a rinse with ordinary washing up liquid afterwards to make sure that there's no cleaner left on the pan. I also tend to avoid non-stick roasting pans so that I can clean them with steel wool (a brilliant invention!).

This tip cannot be used on nonstick pans but works on everything else.
Buy household ammonia from the chemist or ironmonger and put it in a spray bottle - dissoved with water - NEVER PUT IT NEAR BLEACH - then spray dish or pan put inside bin bag and leave outside overnight or for several hours as it stinks the place out.

You can then rinse it off.

I read a tip on here to leave a crusty horrid pan outside upside down on the grass overnight, next morning the bits just drop out.

Sounds totally bizzare and I have no idea about the science behind it but apparently it works a dream.

I haven't deared to try it for fear of the looks I'll get from my neighbours ;D

    Thanks everyone. :)

Does seem like a lot of hassle to frequently clean so-called non stick pans though.  I like the idea of leaving it outside on the grass overnight, though it does seem pretty odd ... must try this one.  ;D

I know my neighbour well Galtizz and she's as batty as me, so don't care what she thinks.  ;) ;D

I buy the really cheap ones which aren't non stick. About 79p for a great big one from wilko's or Asda. At Christmas they are aptly named 'turkey tins' ::)

I use it for roasting veg too so because I'm using olive oil the veg doesn't stick.

I put it in soak as soon as I've finished with it and one of those cheap green scourer thingies gets all the gunk off.

    ;D ;D ;D

I use an olive oil spray (Fry Lite), which obviously cuts down on the oil used, but doesn't help the gunge on the bottom of the pan. Perhaps I ought to try a cheap pan and get scrubbing. ;) ::)

When you've taken the meat out of the tin, add about an inch of water and put it on the hob to boil.

Scrape the tin with a wooden spoon to get all the gunk off, then reduce down to add to your gravy.

This doesn't work on the cheaper non-stick tins, which buckle on the hob, but I have a heavy roaster and it works a treat.
Just run, run and keep on running!

My mum stayed up here last week. She said to me that she was told at school in home economics class that the blacker the roasting tin the better. They build up their own protective layer which is is effective as the non-stick stuff - and cheaper too! She went to school in the 1940s, in the days before teflon pans and dishwashers.
