It seems to me you need to have a reason why the house is empty, for instance, it's uninhabitable and you are working on it, to be exempt.
Not sure you are exempt just because you have no tennant. Holiday homes, for instance, are not exempt just because they are only used 3 months of the summer each year.
I don't know for sure, but just googled and it doesnt mention anything about lack of tennants. Just about uninhabitable and carrying out works etc.0 -

Are we talking about council tax here? Sorry, not read all the thread.
I think each council has different rules, but I know where we used to live as long as a house was empty and unfurnished you didn't have to pay any council tax on it for up to a maximum of 6 months. I don't think there was a limit on how many times you could do this either, so if you rented out a place that was unfurnished you wouldn't need to pay coundil tax for any void period up to 6 months.
You're right, holiday homes wouldn't be exempt on the basis that they are (normally) furnished.0 -
if they wanted to these two were bright enough they could avoid being liable for council completely. this is why i don't think council tax will be a big issue for these guys.
however, for me their only issue is cashflow not minor issues like council tax that are avoidable for them anyway.
Seems unlikely to me.. these mechanisms you suggest exist for evading council tax.
Who owns a house and plot like this I wonder?
(Give it a moment to load, hover on the Aerial tab, select 'Bird's Eye' view, and scroll the map slightly over to the right to the first B road marker point.)
I guess whoever does have ownership over that entire plot has no worries that lenders and creditors could try to make a claim against it were they to not be able to come good on debt obligations. You just get a sense that really clever people live there who've either protected through companies or whatever (PN), or seen banks lend to them whilst giving them little by way of personal security in case of default.0 -

it's quite simple - the rules are there right or wrong. like them or not.0 -
i do it all of the time - it's perfectly legal and the rules are there.
you've also got a 6-week rule that i won't go into either.
it will upset and rile a few people unfortunately.0 -
Perhaps you could offer your expert advice to the Wilsons. They don't seem to have a clue about these things. Seriously, a successful sounding person like yourself might be able to help them in return for a few quid a week.0
