they dont do any work on your car so have no interest in finding anything except what needs done

bear in mind the MOT is to keep your car roadworthy and safe so its better to find out about things needing done

Just to say I don't agree to this idea 100%. I have experience of council testers and they are the most picky - by the book - testers you can find, I agree they will not find work that is not there. Except in genuine error we all make mistakes and they are not perfect in this respect either..... example they once failed a guys discs he went to the scrap yard got two good discs, fitted them and went back for the retest, they failed him again for not having fitted new discs.....he appealed to VOSA and they got a ticking off. They will not illegally create work which wasn't there in the first place. But they might find work which a normal MOT station would overlook.

MOT's are always going to be a problem, because some charge full price, and others charge down to £20 (they do around here is this the cheapest in the country for a standalone test?). You just have to trust them at the end of the day. I take mine to a £20 test with the view that if they fail it, I will have a look to see if the fail is correct, if I think it's not I'll go to another tester and hope for the best, if I lose then all I lose is the cost of the second test or the £20 depending on how you look at it..

Of course I try and identify everything I can before the test to minimise the chance of failing, my car passed first time (£20 test) a month ago.

How old is that list? The one in Chelmsford closed down over 12 months ago, apparently.

Can't you rely on some garage that has recommendations from a friend. We have a local one who put my old escort through an MOT. I was dreading it, but it only needed a new number plate and a headlight adjustment :j and an advisory for one of the wheel bearings to be done, told him to go ahead and do it, "Oh, u don't need that done atm, you got a while to go yet b4 it starts giving u problems"
Needless to say that garage now has my full backing and go back there whenever my MOT is due because i know he didn't rip me off.

I made the mistake of buying an old Subaru Impreza, took it there for MOT and he told me not to even ask for a quote for fixing it for MOT as there was waaaaaay too much welding to be done for it to be safe.

Sometimes going by word of mouth is better than going to the big garages like kwik fit etc

What was wrong with your numberplate?

I guess, given the age of the car, it had possibly deteriorated (on the back) making it difficult to read from a distance.

That's assuming nothing deliberate like incorrectly spaced characters, but then that's usually both number plates.

I was wondering if they failed it for having no BSAU mark - which they are not supposed to do anymore. Again this is usually a fail for both plates.

Agree, but regarding your signature, so does Gordon Brown, but to say that is very unfair on you;););)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Spot on Premier :) Age deterioration. Looked like it was water damaged, which was leaking onto the numbers on rear plate.
