Mot

Hello all, hope everyone's okay!

I've got my MOT due December 1st for my little KA and was wondering what people thought of a few MOT centres. My local one charges £54, and I've used them once before and they spotted a repair worth £150. Wanting to save some money on the initial MOT cost, and not wanting someone to pick out faults that aren't really there, I'm thinking of travelling somewhere else.

I've found vouchers online for Nationwide, Kwik Fit and Autotrader so the general car MOT would be around £30; the first two seem to have some pretty bad reviews (ie. people have been quotes hundreds of pounds worth of repairs which suddenly disappeared when they took their car elsewhere), but I've not seen any reviews of Autotrader.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks very muchly :)

Thanks Nile. And thanks Custardy - I called one within a 45 min drive from me, and they charge £45 like the one down the road from where I live, but I guess they're less likely to pick out things that aren't necessary (which, according to reviews online, places like Nationwide do).

Any thoughts on Nationwide/Kwik Fit or Autotrader in terms of the half price MOT would be much appreciated! Thank you :)

  • nation wide are part of the AA group if you have AA cover this is the first place recovery will take your car! as for MOT's if something falls below standard and ultimately fails the mot you do not have to take it to that garage to be repaired it can be done elsewhere then when done you can take it back to the MOT station for them to check the item has been repaired and give you the mot certificate! pitty you dont live by me a garage mot station does mot's for £28 and lets you take it away to be repaired and free retest when yopu take it back.!
  • Please Please whatever you do ignore the national chains. The MOT may be half price but the extra work the pile in certainly isnt worth it.

The safest option is to take it to a council run MOT station. You'll save yourself a packet in the long run, And they wont pile any un-needed work onto you.

You'll find hundreds of kwik fit ripped me off threads on this board.

Where's 'local' roughly? I got mine done for £40 in a garage in County Durham the other week and it sailed through (it's 7 years old with over 100k on the clock so wasn't expecting it to!).

Thought so; I'll steer clear of the chain MOT centres then! Thanks for the list of council run centres, I think I'll either travel to one of those (I'm Herefordshire/Worcestershire area by the way) or use a more local one, even if it's more expensive in the long run, & hope they don't go out of their way to find 'problems' that aren't there. Maybe my little KA will be as lucky as you car Hopefulfooluk! :)

You could also find an MOT testing station which only does MOTs. The same applies, they're not doing the repairs so they're unlikely to look for problems that don't exist. I used to use one and they were really helpful, when something was wrong they showed me it.

Worth bearing in mind that if something is wrong you'll probably pay at least a partial fee for the retest after you've had it repaired elsewhere, unless the repairer MOTs it inc in the cost of the repair.

The best option is to find a trustworthy local firm who'll MOT and repair and not look for fault.

If only it was that easy, eh? :D

The council MOT argument is a poor solution, as they don't do repairs then you face a retest for a simple fix, which a decent garage will do free of charge.

I agree that there is no substitute for a reliable local garage. The problem, for many people, is identifying one.
