check your facts kwik break, after reading your post yesterday i plugged in my live box which also states DownstreamCurrRate 512 so you reckon its capped at 512mb yet a speedtest on speedtest.net showed 1.2mb, yet when i plugged in my netgear 2 mins later it was back 2mb
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.
  • thanks pitkin i will try that suggestion, just got to look for a cheap router

the router is still only part of the problem it still needs to be resolved through orange themselves you justneed to keep hounding them till they take you seriously which is why you need to go back to them with a range of speed tests

I've had a quick search and cannot find any other reports of Livebox stats showing the incorrect sync. However if the livebox isn't reporting the figures correctly then there is nothing I can add to this as correct stats are the essential starting point to sorting out problems of this type so I'll leave it to you two to sort this one out.

the livebox is a cheap router which has its settings set by the ISP (in this case orange) thats why i recommend doing some speed test with another router and reporting them back to orange.

If they are sending 2mb down the line but have set the router to 512kb its going to show lots of errors at there end so they will be constantly changing the settings until no errors are reported

  • well there could be some truth in that pitkin, the open reach engineer was getting 5 or 6 on his standard issue equipment, i don't remember which figure but i got about 4.3mbs on the livebox so i would say it that its settings on the router and whatever limits orange can impose at their end to cap useage.

For future reference where Orange restrict speed go to speedtester.bt.com and if your speeds are half the set profile Orange are restricting you - contact BT head office with official complaint against BT Openworld reporting no faults when Orange tell you BT say all is ok, only then do you find out the truth...Orange speed restrictions as verified by BT CEO office ;)
If I helped or saved you money - Thank me
If I helped you spend some money - spank me
    If I done both - :lipsrseal me:eek:

I would bet my last pound that the problems are all down to [STRIKE]Lemon [/STRIKE]oops Orange.
Unless you are offering at least 100:1 I'm not taking that one on :)

Most of the confusion seems to stem from misunderstandings about exactly what constitutes the speed. Assuming this is Orange on Ipstream and not their LLU which I thionk they are ditching you have...

Router/modem sync - governed entirely by the line and internal extension wiring although it will vary depending on whether it is ADSL or the newer ADSL2+ as well. The speeds quoted all suggest ADSL or a line so long ADSL2+ wouldn't make much difference anyway. It can also be capped to some fixed rate although that isn't very common.

IP profile rate. This is set by the BTw Dynamic Line Management routines and is quick to fall but slow to rise in the event of a glitch on the line. It is always less than the sync and gets set generaly in 0.5Mbps steps except at very low rates.

Throughput. The maximum theoretical throughput is ~ 84% of the sync rate because some of the data transmission is overheads (packet headers etc.). Any time you don't achieve that magic 84% you need to decide why - it may be that...
the IP profile got set low due to a glitch and hasn't risen back yet
the data source can't deliver at the rate you can receive
there is contention somewhere along the route to you
the ISP is employing throttling/shaping technoogy to reduce your speed
the ISP may simply be over contending their own network
there may be a problem with the backhaul from the exchange
there may be high error rates
    a combination of the above

The most common (especially with poor ISPs) is that they are over contended and simply cannot deliver the speeds that the customer line is capable of.

    ====

I see I was fooled - this is an old post reopened (why oh why do people do that???) and ran to more than one page. It seems that Orange or BTw had capped the sync which as I said is unusual
