BT and/or Orange Lying about Broadband Speeds!

i moved and had my orange broadband brought with me, originally i had problems which resulted in an BT Openreach engineer changing the telephone box inside my home the new box had filters in it which increased the speed. he tested it using his a broadband router he takes with him and siad he got either 5 mbps or 6 mbps then we plugged in my orange live box and i got just over 4mbps. but which was fine, the last 4 weeks i been getting 2.5.

before i was connected i called up bt and orange VARIOUS times asking them what speed i should get and they were both saying 5, now calling up orange and bt they say 2.5, WHO is lying and WHY are they lying? i am disgusted the engineer and i saw PLAIN AS DAY that i recieved 4 and more so whats going off here then??

i want to complain and i wanted to get the name of the engineer so that i can get either bt or orange to speak to him, anyone know what i should do here.

hope someone can help, thanks

It might be worth just rebooting your router before you get any more disgusted.
What is your potential line speed?
    http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome
And what is your actual line speed?

You should do these tests with the router plugged into the test socket behind the BT master socket faceplate, as it's possible that your extension sockets or internal wiring are causing the problem.
You also need to say how you are connecting-by ethernet or by wireless?

I don't know about anyone lying, but whenever I checked my potential line speed in the past month is said it was 2.5Mb. Since checking yesterday and today it now says 1Mb so I am not happy either.

speed is dependant on how close you are to the BT Exchange, I pay for 8Mb but get 2Mb

thats what i said i called them both up before telephone line was installed they were both saying 5, the engineer did the remedial works and his equipment said 5/6 now both companies say 2.5. they are LYING thats why i wanted to know how i could get in contact with the engineer that came out and tested it.

The only way you'd do that is to call Orange, and they're hardly going to give you the phone no. of an OR engineer, even if they had it. Why don't you run the tests already advised and post the results to see if anyone can help you?

  • i have already done the tests, i did a test when the egineer was here, as i siad they have now both changed their story and say i should only get 2.5. i already tried orange is ther a way to contact bt openreach

No, there isn't. They are a wholesale company, they don't deal with the public. Why do you think an OR engineer would 'lie' to you, what possible motive would he have to do that?
As I said, unless the tests were both done from the test socket then the results are not comparable. Your service is 'up to 8MB', so whether you get 4 Mbps or 2.5Mbps does not make any contractual difference.
Have you tried a reboot to resynch the router as suggested?

  • i spoke to orange yesterday he said that if whatever test show that the line can achieve something different they CAN change the speed. so YES they can do that and yes i beleive they have done something here too, the engineer saw it here and i saw it too. i already know that isp can limit your speed in regards to Fair Usage Policy if you use too much or go over your allowable limit.

I am reading, but your complaint makes no sense. You have no contract with BT, if you have a problem with your broadband service you need to speak to Orange.
If your speed has been reduced due to breach of FUP then that is another matter entirely, but surely Orange would have told you that when you called them?
