Maximum Speed on Virgin NTL 250 Modem?

A couple of questions please.
Does this Virgin modem support speeds up to 10Mbps? I have a friend on the 'L' package, but he's only getting around 3Mbps. and as far as I'm aware all accounts have now been upgraded to 10Mbps nationally now?
This modem has both a USB and an ethernet connection. He's using it on USB, and what's worse it's an ancient Pentium 4 with only USB 1. Is this most likely to be the cause of the slow line speed?
I'm going to lend him an ethernet cable to try out tomorrow, but wondered if the modem needs upgrading anyway-although it's marked NTL he says it's only 2 or 3 years old?

Mate,
I still have my service manuals from my Service Tech days with NTL,Gimme a while to dig them out.0 -
Cheers guys, looks like it's certainly worth swapping the USB cable for an ethernet cable to see what improvement we can get, If still nowhere near 10 megs, then he can call Virgin. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

There is a long running thread on Digital Spy, which even now has reports of customers still not upgraded.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Virgins modems on USB cannot go over 4mb.0

Update: swapped the USB cable for an ethernet cable, and the speed went (after a reboot of the cable modem) from about 3Mbps to just under 10 Mbps. Not a bad result for 10 minutes work I thought!
Thanks to all for your advice. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Sorry could'nt get back to you in time. The speed in the book is listed as 10Mbps max.0
