Is there such a thing as Requesting a PAC code "too early"?

I'm coming up to the end of a Carphone warehouse 18 mth contract (02) and would like to port my number to a different Network.

My contract actually ends on the 27th Dec. but i would like to send my PAC request/cancellation letter off at the end of this week (around the 13th Nov.).

I know they say you should send this letter to them by 30 days before the contract is up (i.e 27th Nov.). But i'll be sending the request "44 days" in advance, as opposed to 30 days.

Is there any charge or fee for requesting this 14 days early?

It may sound silly, but i know these companies have some very sneaky, underhand policies.

  • I'm in a similar situation as you.

I think once you actually use your PAC code, your old contract ends....but CPW will want you to pay for the remainder of your contract.
For example, you say your contract ends on Dec 27th. If you port your number (i.e use your PAC) on Dec. 20th, you will still have to pay CPW for the remaining 7 days of the contract. I don't think they can charge you a fee as such.

Someone can correct me if i'm wrong.
  • Is it not the case that you can request your PAC code at any time, but you will always have to pay the monthly charges on your contract up to the end of it's duration?
So, as has been said recently in other posts, the least cost method is to request the pac code just before the 30 days to the end of your contract (depending on the time your provider takes to issue the code), to ensure you get it around the 30 days to expiry date. That triggers notice to end your contract if you use it in it's 30 day life.
Then use it on a new contract circa 5 days before that expiry date to give time for processing. Unlikely you will get it all to coincide exactly.
  • I got my PAC from O2 / CPW on Friday, but my contract doesn't end til December 18th. My last payment will be at the end of this month, and then I'll be cancelling the direct debit. I'm holding off porting my number to my new phone until nearer the end of the month - I'm paying for the minutes so I might as well use them. My PAC code expires on December 2nd, so as long as I use it at least a few days before this everything should be fine... *touches wood*
  • Once the port has gone through you will be charged for the full remaining balance of the contract, so if you port a month early you will still be charged up to the last day of your contract finish date. I'd request to go on the cheapest possible tariff but this can only usually be done if you request this before your new billing month.

What if i stay with CPW but want to change Network?

I'm actually now toying with the idea of staying with Carphone Warehouse but want to change from my monthly 02 contract (which comes to an end next month) over to an Orange "Sim only" rolling contract.

What would be the proceedure for this? Do i still have to request a PAC code or anything?

Your service is from o2, not CPW as they really justy manage your account. You'll still need your PAC, but will have to pay the minimum term/30 days notice (whichever is greater). As suggested, ring around the 29th to request PAC, then use it around 25th...unless you just want out quickly.

    Hi there,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I terminated my CPW contract the other day by sending a reg'd letter to the Southampton address (thanks to this forum for the info), I received my PAC through via text today. The text also says "if you do not activate the PAC by the 12/12/09 we will keep sending you bills".

What's that all about? I specifically stated in my letter that I was giving 30 notice of my termination of contract, so surely they cannot still bill me beyond my last bill on the 12/11/09 (I am on a rolling 30 day contract).

I have a new phone coming soon with another provider, and I might want to use this number instead of porting over my old number using the PAC.
  • Further update :

I received another text today (13th Nov) to say that if I don't use my PAC by the 12th Nov (yesterday) that they will continue to bill me!!

    This is concerning!!

You MUST use your PAC to terminate the contract, if you don't the contract continues. If it's now expired you'll need to re-request it and give another 30 days notice. Maybe worth reducing your tarriff to the cheapest available (check it is still only 30 days notice) and then request PAC.

I've requested numerous PAC's and it's always been made clear that I must use it to end the contract.

I am also with 02/CPW and i'm thinking of porting my number to another network. My contract ends at the end of the Dec 2009 and i understand will need to contact them at end of this month requesting my PAC.

Would someone be kind enough to tell me the address I need to write to so i can check this against the address they give me when i request my PAC.

    Thanks.
