Nokia 5800 Problem!

Hi,
Please help!
I love my Nokia 5800 but this morning it has gone wrong.
I cannot use any applications as whichever "button" I press on the touch screen brings up the menu down the right side (icons are music, camera, video, internet globe etc).
Wherever I press the touchscreen this menu comes up but does not allow me to access any of the apps.
I cannot access texts, alarm, contacts, etc. In fact I can't access anything. Even the touchscreen exit button doesn't work so I have to use the red button to clear the screen.
The XpressMusic button (top right) is lit up constantly - is it usually? I can't remember. :o
Help!!! Please!

PS I have removed the SIM and battery for an hour in the hope that would sort it, but no joy. :(
 Ageing is a privilege not everyone gets.

There are some bugs in Nokia 5800 firmware. Even newer firmwares are not bug free. As a result, the phone might become non usable under some random circumstances (eg. while transferring file via USB cable etc.). The only way to restore it is by hard reset. You can do this by holding GREEN + RED + CAMERA button together while switching on the phone (you may need help from someone as it is difficult to press 4 buttons of your own). Continue holding all 4 buttons untill you see Nokia holding hand logo and you are asked to enter your country! Hard reset will delete all user data and restore the phone to its original factory setting (if you have updated firmware, this will still remain though). After hard reset, you need to restore your own data from backup.

PS: This works only if your firmware version is 20 or above. You can check this by dialling *#0000# on keypad (if you can access keypad dialler).
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.
  • The above has helped me solve previous nokia problems, but do ensure you backup your first data just incase, my photos/music stayed on just fine, but always do a backup if its your only copy.
Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies
  • Thanks movilgo.
No can't access keypad dialler - if I press that button the stupid music menu on the right side comes up again. :(
I'm not aware of doing any firmware updates since I got the 'phone.
Got the 'phone at the end of July/start of August if that helps but probably not!
Do I do the hard reset with the SIM in it please? If so, I take it that my contacts, etc that are saved on it will be safe? I'll just lose my text, pics, music etc that are stored on the 'phone?
Apologies if these appear silly questions, but I am not very tech minded!! :o

    Thank you.
My contacts are saved on my SIM so they will be safe won't they?
I've no photo's on there or texts which are important so not concerned if I lose those. I also have my Nokia music on my lappy so can transfer that again. Is there anything else I am forgetting that would need backing up? :o

Contacts on SIM will be safe. Only things on phone memory will be erased. When I did this on my 5800, partial contents of memory card was also erased! Better take a backup of memory card too.

  • Okay please excuse my stupid questions....
I've plugged mobile into my lappy and have in my lappy under:
    Computer/Nokia 5800 2 icons -
1 is memory card and the other is Phone memory.
So how do I back them up from here please? :o

I'm not thick in real life, just with tech things :o

I have never backed up my own phone :D

Just copy all files/folders from phone/memory to computer. Make sure you are copying hidden files too. It should work fine for memory cards but not sure if you can resore to phone memory later by direct copy-paste. For phone memory backup nokia recommends using Nokia PC Suite.

Yes, first country is Afghanistan but after that you should be able to select United Kingdom by scrolling down!!

If that doesn't work, you are probably looking forward to take it to your nearest Nokia sertvice center :(

    Thanks for your help, though.
