Hi,
Well i've had Sky telly in for about 2 months now, and tbh was expecting a phonecall like this sooner or later. Someone claiming to be from Sky has rung up from the number 08001218143, offering 2 years warranty on the Sky equipment.
The guy on the phone introduced himself, and seemed to know everything about my Sky account -what channels I had subscribed to etc etc. He then spent the best part of 10 minutes explaining the wonderful advantages of a Sky warranty which covers repairs to the box and dish for 2 years. He also mentioned that it also covered repairs to my TV, other old Sky boxes in the household, and even repairs to the exterior walls should the dish cause any damage!!!! Yeah, right....
After all the waffle, and without mentioning any prices, the caller then said: "Right, so i'll just finish processing your order." He had not given me the price, and I hadn't even agreed to anything, so I stoped him there, to which he appeared very p**sed off, implying I was stupid not to accept. I asked him if he was from Sky: he told me they "Represent Sky, but were not Sky employees"....Bang down went the phone.
Now i'm a young(ish) bloke and could see right through this con artist, but imagine if they had rung my 82 year old nan - they would have had her tied up in knots and have accessed her bank account by now.....
So if the above number rings offering Sky services: they are NOT from Sky, they just want your money. If you want a repair warranty on the equipment -go look for a reputable company yourself rather than buying from cold-calling cowboys.

I got a call today from a bloke offering me Sky equipment cover. They did ask for my husband by name (didn't even get the name right though). Didn't give him chance to give me all the spiel, I just told him we had no interest in that thank you.
Don't know what number it came from though, as it was withheld.
I can't believe these people are still doing it. The mother in law nearly fell for it a while back.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £10,153.440 -
Same here had a phone call informing me my warranty was almost up on my SKY box. Beside the fact the warranty had expired 4yrs ago I politely told the guy I would just cancel my viewing and sign back up again for a brand new box as I wasnt bound to any contract.Credit card and overdraft at 18. 2 loans and 3 storecards at 20. University education flushed down the toilet through debt at 22. Car finance at 23. Car repossessed at 24. Rock bottom at 25. Learnt my lesson 26-33. Now 34 with a mortgage on an affordable house, a car paid for with cash and a bank account in credit. I learnt the hard way.0

A quick web search for the number say the number is for Domestic and General and not Sky.
Thanks for the heads up though as I wasn't aware of this and will be getting one at somepoint I imagine.0 -
I had a similar call telling me that it would be wise to insure my Sky box. I just put the phone on speaker and carried on with my lunch. When he had finished his "spiel", I asked him "What Sky Box?") I have never subscribed to Sky!:laugh::laugh::laugh:0

surely if your sky equiptment breaks outside the warrantly period, you just cancel your subscription and re apply?? are the dish and box not their property anyway and they are just hiring it to you like with virgin?0

You won't get the free equipment by reapplying - you would still be registered as a subscriber.are the dish and box not their property anyway and they are just hiring it to you like with virgin?
No they are not. From the day they are fitted the dish and box belong to you which is why there is a £65 call out charge after the warranty expires.michaelboyd2 wrote: »dannyjebb you are so right.
No he isn't - he is so wrong.
There are ways around the £65 call out charge and if you are a long standing subscriber they will usually waive the fee if you ask nicely or threaten to cancel.
However assuming you can just resubscribe is not the way.0 -

As an ex Sky Engineer (I say Engineer as I am more qualified than 90% of Sky's installers) I can say jem is correct.
Anyway,this statement:
contradict's itself.IF the dish & box does not belong to Sky,then who are you hiring it from then? Yourself?are the dish and box not their property anyway and they are just hiring it to you like with virgin?0 -
Hello there, i just wanna give the heads up
The people who rang are domestic and general as stated earlier.
They are actually the designated insurance company as agreed with SKY themselves.
So if you ever get a sky plan direct it WILL be with D&G, as sky can't underwrite it themselves.
If you go elsewhere, it cannot be determined who will be repairing your box etc.

My experience has been that INDEPENDENT repairers are far and away the best option. They charge around £40-£45 for a QUALITY repair which will last years. How do they do this? By replacing second rate components (especially capacitors) with top grade ones.
I would recommend that nobody wastes their money on insurance policies. Obviously see if $ky will replace for free, but do be aware of so-called 'refurbished' units, which are nothing of the sort: they are merely digiboxes rejected in some way by other customers.
If you have looked after your receiver is it not better to have it repaired than get what will be a pig in a poke?RIP independent MSE.
