Staffordshire Bull Terrier fits the bill for all of that.
2 adults in quiet home.
It will love one of you more than the other but will be very happy to see either of you when you get home
No other animals
Perfect as well known for not liking other animals (although I think this is partly down to behaviour)
Have a garden.
Perfect for laying in the sun in (you also will need a sofa for the dog to lay on in the winter)
Not bothered about grooming, happy to do it if necessary.
Short haired. Its only when they are moulting they really need grooming and only irregular
Not a huge dog.
Normally small but well built
Must not be aggressive breed
Depsite some peoples misguided views on the dogs they aren't aggressive. Unless they are trained to be aggressive which any dog can be. They are said to be dog aggressive but I think personally its a training issue and they pick up on other peoples views of them.
Will get 40 mins - 2hr walkies a day, but the object of the dog isn't to give us long, long walkies and runs!
They are very lazy dogs but do enjoy walks. Mine will go so far and then just simply turn round and wait for me to follow them home. They will much prefer cuddling up on the sofa than long walks.
Must not be a noted 'escape artist' type
They love people and if trained correctly your be the object of their desire and they won't want to run off from the centre of their universe.
We both work, so must be able to tolerate periods of being 4-6 hrs up to 4 days a week home alone
Mine is alone for 3-4 hours a day and just sleeps. Sometimes I don't actually think she realises I go out.
Not a notably destructive chewer type.
Again a training issue
Must be a 'healthy' breed, not one known for a lot of potential health issues.
According to the dogs profiles they are not really known for any real problems. They are very well built dogs and will live a long healthy life.
I have a Staff and if you can get over peoples views on them then they are great. Some people will eye you suspciously. Some people will just come up to you and ask you to say hello to the dog and usually they are very happy to say hello. They are very lazy, playful and loveable dogs. Plus if you wanted one from a rescue there are so many you can pick any colour, age, size or anything else (although of course there are plenty of responsible breeders who I am sure would knock out the exact one you wanted........)
I have a brindle Staff (crossed with a greyhound) who is the perfect dog and before I got a dog I would never dream of getting one.0 -
Gotta agree with you about the Staffies mrcol - my mum was never a fan (likes elegant sighthoundy types) till she looked after a lost one recently overnight - she was a sweet little tubby thing, and my mum absolutely fell in love with her - she was so affectionate and loving!
When the owner came forward the next day, my mum didnt want to part with her - she had already decided to keep her if she was unclaimed! She has definitely been converted - I think she may well end up with a staffie sooner or later now!
As far as the breed goes, they are generally very people focussed and love interaction- I know that another poster on here's dog (staffie) has recently qualified as a PAT dog (pets as therapy) - which means she has passed a full temprement and behaviour assessment, and they are confident she will be calm and gentle, whatever is thrown at her!0 -
CFC, I think its going to be any breed that suits your circs. Get in touch with a few rescues, give them your list of must haves and see what they say.
Good luck whatever dog you get
Oh and get him/her insured asap - my two have cost nearly £100 between them this last week, tube of optimmune eye ointment for one and ear drops for the other  And the optimmune is a life long treatment apparently - £35 a tiny tube  0 -
Whippets will snooze all day and exercise like the clappers when they're taken out. Here's a lovely one http://www.dogsblog.com/category/whippet/.................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0 -
I agree that staffies are ideal dogs, I have two and they're really easy and loving:D
We used to breed and own labs, and although lovely are not always the easy option people think, due to their need for tons of exercise, and chewing habits:eek::eek:
Good luck in your search:D"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"
