I make these nut butters regularly. They are delicious on toast. I use organic nuts. (You can also make seed butters using sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc.
CAUTION: Make sure you DON'T OVERLOAD your food processor!! If it's 400 watts or less reduce the quantity of nuts!!
PEANUT BUTTER
375g of unsalted peanuts with brown skins.
4 teaspoons of ground nut (peanut) oil.
pinches of salt to your taste
Roast the nuts at 180C fan oven (200C ordinary) for 12-15 minutes depending on how "roasted" a flavour you like. You may want to mix half way through to ensure even roasting. Cool and then add them to a food processor, with the oil and salt. Process until a good mass like bought peanut butter - this can take some time. DONT OVERLOAD your processor! Reduce the quantity of nuts if the machine starts to protest/slow down. Add a couple of pinches of salt, process and taste, and adjust as necessary. Put in a jar with a tight fitting lid and it will keep in a cupboard for weeks.
THREE NUT BUTTER
As above, except -
125g Almonds, with skins.
125g Unsalted Cashew Nuts
125g Hazelnuts, with skins.
4 teaspoons of Hazelnut oil. (Other oils will probably work, e.g. ground nut oil).
Salt to taste.
Roast for 10 minutes at the sane temperature.
Hope you enjoy!0 -

Anyone got one? Have been noticing the OH getting through it like nobody's business and wondered if I could save a bit of money by making some up in bulk rather than buying. Often buy supermarket economy version etc but did just wonder about homemade too...0

Hi claralou,
There's an earlier thread with some recipes and advice that may help so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.

Hi,
I'm toying with the idea of treating myself to the 32.99 compact food processor in the argos catalogue, up to now I've only ever used a basics hand blender which I use for the usual soups & stuff http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4200442/Trail/searchtext%3EFOOD+PROCESSOR.htm
Is a food processor the right gadget? They do seem very versatile but I'm too old skool to be familiar with all they are capable of.
I don't wanna get this UNLESS it can make me nut butters. Or is there another reasonably priced gadget that will make what is in our house a staple food with a minimum of fuss and kerfuffle on a regular basis?
I want to make my own nut & seed butters as they are getting SO expensive (basics peanut butter is over a quid a jar now!) to buy ready made. Almond nut butter on toast is such an easy way of getting calcium/healthy fats into my dairy free lad that I don't want the escalating cost of commercial butters to be a reason for having to give it up while funds are tight.
We also like various other nut/seed butters like cashew and by making my own I could maximise the benefit when whole nuts are reduced (after Xmas being a good example) as most nuts/seeds etc keep well. My plan is to store whole and make as and when needed.
Do others here make their own nut/seed butters ? If so what gadget do you use?0 -
I have a cheap and cheerful Kenwood food processor. Bung peanuts or almonds in. Turn on.
You can add a bit of oil if it's too sticky, and some salt if you wish (but if you're using roasted peanuts, they already have salt in).
I discovered the joy of making nut butter in a food processor when I was trying to chop some almonds and it all went too far
Haven't tried seeds, so I don't know how well that works, but nuts are fine in a food processor.0 -
I just bought a 'Hinari Genie' on Amazon - it's like a magic bullet but cheaper. There are YouTube videos of people making nut butter with the bullet so you could make it with this too. Mine was less than £25 delivered and with such a small footprint I keep it out all the time0
