AVG Installation/Uninstallation problems

Hi,

I really hope no-one has asked this question before. If they have, I apologise - I did look but couldn't find anything.

I have an Acer Aspire 5920G running Vista Home Premium. I've always used AVG Free Virus checker and have had no serious problems up till now. I recently upgraded to AVG 9 but shortly after ran a system restore. Since I did that, my AVG no longer works. I;ve tried going on to their home page and completely uninstalling it but when I try that, I get an Installation failed message.

"Installer initialization failed due to following error": @AvgErrorCode_Ox0253%FILE%="C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8"@AvgErrorCode_Ox0020

Can anyone please help me with this problem? I can neither uninstall AVG or install any other virus checker and I really am not comfortable being online without one.

Thank you,

Linzi

Have your tried re-installing AVG over the existing installation to fix it? You should then be able to uninstall it. Thats if it will let you re-install it.
  • Go to Free Software Downloads and Software Reviews - Download.com and look for and install
revo uninstaller this little program lets you completely uninstall the program you want rid of safely
then you can go back to download.com and reinstall the latest version of avg free or other as you wish Take care with this though when the revo uninstaller box opens you click on the program you want to uninstall and then click on uninstall it will ask you whether you do or dont want to do the action when you pick yes it then lists options i use the moderate uninstall option as it is done in the safe mode.read all the prompts as you go along and all will be fine.
hope this is of use to you. all the items on download .com are safe and virus checked.

Did you get this when using the AVG Remover tool? If not then download and run this:
    http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/avg_arm_sup_____.dir/avgremover.exe

If this works then I'd recommend installing Avira antivirus:
    http://download.cnet.com/Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10322935.html?part=dl-10322935&subj=dl&!!!!!button&cdlPid=11012914
  • Thanks for all your suggestions. I've tried installing over the top and uninstalling but I get the same error message each time. I tried the revo uninstaller from cnet but although it appeared to download, nothing appeared on my system. I even tried saving it to my desktop first but that didn't work either.

Getting a bit frantic now - lol!

I don't have Vista, only XP, but - have you tried uninstalling from your Control Panel > Remove Programs? Does Vist have this facility?
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
  • Yes, I tried uninstalling from both my Control Panel and the AVG site. It just won't seem to let me do anything to rectify this. I should have learned - this happened to me on my other laptop and when I had finally sorted it out, I installed Avira on that onewith no problems.

That's weird, linzi. But don't despair as there are many very knowledgeable people on this forum, and I'm sure tomorrow someone will have the solution. Good luck.

You need to run the AVG REMOVAL TOOL that david posted
    http://www.avg.com/download-tools

If that doesnt work you need to reinstall AVG 8 THEN use the removal tool

If THAT doesnt work then id guess your machines infected

  • Yeah, I've tried everything. They appear to download and then, nothing. Don't know where I got an infection from as I'm always so careful but there you go - I suppose I'm going to have to have it reformatted - grrrrrrr! lmaooo

Thans everyone for all your help.

Formatting is definitely your best option

If you wish to try to remove the nasty (Assuming thats the problem)

Reboot and keep pressing F8 to get into SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Post the log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
    reboot
Click DO A SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE (Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
