I had this exact same problem with my Pioneer. It turned out to be as simple as switching the DVD Writer to be the master drive and my dvd played to slave and I have had no problems since.

    Thanks Bossyboots

I will give that a go as i burnt a dvd with Nero 6 last night and it still took 28 minutes. It said it was burning at x4, but obviously something is not right.

Do i just go to device manager, select the drive and change the master and slave options around? (excuse my lack of knowledge!)
    Rock on MSE!!!

to change the master/slave options you need to open the PC and look at the back of the drive and move a small connector from one position to another, like this (you need to check the ones fr yours )

Tell us your set up, what is on each IDE cable and in which order.

Tell us what operating system you use and if XP what service pack.

Tell us what software you use to burn your images.

Then we might be able to work out your problem quicker.

You also said your disks can only burn at maximum of 4X, however you then said they are buring at 4X. Then what is the problem?

It shouldn't take 28 minutes to burn a full DVD at 4 x. This was the problem I had, in that my computer said it was burning at 8x when in fact it was only burning at 2x.

    1x speed: 59 min
    2x speed: 30 min
    2,4x on 4,7 GB media: 25 min
    2,4x on 8,5 GB media: 45 min
    4x speed: 15 min
8x speed: 8-9 min, depending on writer
12x speed: 6-7min, depending on writer

    To burn a full disk.

So maybe you need the latest version of nero for the series 6.xx.xx which is currently 6.6.1.4 which can be downloaded from here

It isnt as simple as just changing the jumper settings on the drive though.
When you boot up,you get the black screen with info about your drives,it will have all the drives listed and which are master, which are slave.
You will most likely need to note this down before changing the jumper.
You can only have one master and one slave on each cable.I believe the master needs to have the boot loader on one cable so if you have 2 Hard drives, one can be slave but the other one must be master and have a boot loader to boot the second drive if that has an operating system on it.
You can have 2 optical drives on one IDE cable(one master, one slave) or 2 hard drives(master, slave) or one hard drive and one optical drive(master, slave). You might need to take the drive out to see the little diagram on it which tells you which little pin on the back is which (dont know why they always put it in a place you cant see it without unplugging stuff :( )
If nothing is working after changing,at least you can put it all back as before providing you wrote down the original setup.
