My DVD RW drive will only burn at x2 Speed

I have got a NEC DVD RW ND 3520A, which is capable of burning at 16 x (I think) and I am using x4 discs, but for some reason I can only burn at x2 speed, which is taking an absolute age. The discs work perfectly on my dads machine (at 4x speed and using the exact same model DVD RW drive, so I know it is not them).
I am using DVD decrypter or Nero 6 to burn my DVD’s and I am running on Windows XP SP2.
Can anyone help?
Do I have to change some settings on my drive or via my device manager etc?
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I burnt the DVD but it still took 29 minute (approx 4.7 gb). So i will try doonhammer's suggestion, but does anyone else have any ideas?
Have I downloaded the wrong firmware?
Should I download official NEC firmware? (if there is such a thing!)Rock on MSE!!!0 -

some evaluation (demo) versions of software cripple your burn speed, could be that."If you really want to hurt your parents and you don't have nerve enough to be homosexual, the least you can do is go into the arts."0

check the DVD's are not rated at 2X ,they wont burn faster than their rating.0
