Recommendation needed - Water Baby tuition DVD

Options
Could anyone recommend a DVD of how and when (etc) to take your baby in to the water - you know - like the Nirvana album cover (attached).

I am really keen on getting him in to the water especially having seen how he enjoys being in the "big bath" with Mummy and Daddy.

I just want to make sure I'm doing it properly when I start.

I did see a company selling a DVD on this subject at the Olympia Baby show back in October but I didn't think to get any information.

Very many thanks.

S.

P.S. If anyone has a DVD that they don't need or use anymore and would consider selling (or lending) please let me know. S.

Also check your local Children's Information Service for swimming classes from groups like Waterbabes - took my dd from about 4 months & we both loved it.

  • Hi folks.

Thanks for your input. As a result of your post Glad I found the Little Dippers website.

Just perfect. When you view the film snippets on the website you can't help getting a little tingle down your spine.

    Cheers loads.

I paid for my son to do a proper Little Dippers course when he was about 8 months old. It cost a fortune, mind! :o

Was a really lovely experience and I'm really glad that I did it with him. Wouldn't have felt confident enough to dunk him under water on my own, but he was absolutely fine with it. Just came up blinking and didn't cry once!

The only thing is that you really need to keep up with the swimming and practising the Little Dippers techniques regularly. I didn't carry on with it when I went back to work and my son hates swimming now! ::)

We did Aqua Tots (easy to find on internet) which is a bit like the NCT in that it is very middle class and can be a bit precious - but we found it great for our daughter. Apparently Madonna used them or her little boy. She started learning at just over 1 year and we did 5 terms of underwater swimming with her and it did give her lots of confidence e.g. jumping in, going underwater, being in the water without flotation devices, playing, turning back to the side etc. When she was 2.5 she suddenly decided she wasn't going to do what the teacher wanted and we considered the £10 a lesson a waste of money. I enrolled her in the local swimming pool lessons which are ASA approved and she has blossomed ever since.
Aqua Tots are run in private pools all year round and are worth a try to see if your baby responds (they don't all). My daughter can now swim unaided at least a width of the pool on her front and on her back (she is 4.5 now), is very confident, loves swimming, and is quite happy diving to the bottom to pick up hoops and doesn't mind getting her face wet at all.

I reckon we have spent £800 on her in just over 3 years teaching her to swim, so if you can get a book or DVD and teach your little one yourself then go for it! I think it is a marvellous gift to give your child and the earlier the better.
