Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Sunday 8th November. It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.

Morning OS friends,

Lest we forget - In remembrance of all who gave their lives for us, and thoughts and prayers for those they left behind.

Cranky - still in my thoughts.

Diva, continued good vibes for Tris, does he know he has a load of concerned sisters/aunties/mothers/friends over here wishing him well ???? :D
Oh honey, he certainly does.. I always tell him about all the good wishes and love and prayers he is getting. He is always really touched. I am talking to him now and just copy pasted your comment and here is his short and sweet reply
Tristan says:
Sure do. Very sweet. Tell all of them thank you.
Hester - the nerve of them asking your hubby to do overtime! Just shows what a bad choice they made not giving him the job.
Molly - hugs.gifto you hon. And I do not know what the scale is called but when my OH was off work due to a car accident (broken leg) he used all his available sick days up and was put on Stage 1 report the next time he had to have a day off through migraine. It happens in all companies now it seems. Drs' note or not, if you are absent through sickness they count every day.
taplady - glad to hear Janet's news. My friend R in london starts her treatment on Monday - 4 weeks of radiotherapy and then the drug to shut down her ovaries.
soba - Banana muffins sound lovely and it's nice to see you on the Daily again.
Thriftyscotslass - Hope you feel better soon hon.
SunnyGirl hon - woohoo1.gifYou did it! Another one to join my smilie cult.. giggle.gif
Lesley - the second op was due to internal bleeding. Third op was for a kidney transplant I just learnt..

Ok, so as you can see, Tristan and I are chatting. It's a bit sporadic as he is obviously in pain, but it is great to talk to him. The kidney transplant was a bit touch and go apparently as it was an emergency op but it's been 36 hrs so it looks like his body isn't rejecting it which is a relief. Not sure how an op to cut out cancer leads to a kidney transplant but Tris isn't in a state to explain it right now.

The weather forecast is supposed to be dry and clear today so hoping to finally get out of the house and tidy up the patio and take down one of the plastic greenhouses to store over winter. I still have some chillis out there that probably need rescuing if they haven't rotted.

Enjoyed Strictly last night and the right person definitely left, his ego was bigger than his dancing ability ever could be. Was fab to see the Blackpool Tower ballroom.

We have to start clearing things out of the office and lounge ready for the carpet cleaners on Tuesday. They are doing the hall, stairs, lounge and office so have to take out as much as we can as they do not move furniture!

Food wise today we will probably have toast for lunch as we have half a loaf left to use up and a roast pork dinner later. Will be watching the Cenotaph service this morning and no doubt crying as usual. Watched an amazing programme the other afternoon called 'Voices from WW2'. I wept quietly through the whole of it.

I hope you all have a peaceful Sunday. With love, light and squidgyHShuggies.gif for anyone who would like one.

  • Morning Diva & all who follow.
Glad to see you are chatting to Tris, blow him a kiss from me.
I hope it's dry & bright here today as I still have washing to dry.
Lamb chops with roasties for dinner today, hubby will have a full english brekkie when he gets up.
I too will watch the Cenotaph service & light a candle for my Dad, he died 9 years ago now, but fought in WW2. I went to a service at Westminster Abbey many years ago, Prince Charles was there with Di, that's how long ago it was. The service was for the survivors of El Alamein, which my Dad was, he also escaped from the beaches of Dunkirk.
I need to vac round today as I managed to do most else that needed doing.
    Have a good day.
    Hugs Hester

  • Hi Hester!

Tris's replies are a bit slow coming obviously but I have just blown him a kiss from you. He has been silent for 16 mins so far so he might have fallen asleep again bless him!

Your dad sounds amazing hon. And you have obviously inherited his fortitude! I hope you have a good day today.

    Hi MSD and Hester

I'm glad I'm not the only early riser! My cold is still making me feel stuffed up and it wakes me up in the night, so I shall be glad when it's finally gone.

Diva - I loved Strictly last night - that ballroom is fantastic, isn't it? The result was the right one, too, but I always found myself feeling sorry for Craig, somehow. Still, he was kept in at the expense of some great dancers, which wasn't fair. My money (not that I ever vote!) is on Ricky Whittle and Ali Bastian in the final, but you can never predict how these things will go. Anyway, I love the dresses - it's worth watching for them alone!

Well, we had a lovely time with our visitors who came over for lunch yesterday - we had homemade soup and homemade bread, and they brought some delicious goodies from the local patisserie, so we all ended up well fed. The sun came out, too, which was a bit of a bonus in a wet week.

Today, I'm doing roast chicken but not much in the way of housework. I had a good clean up before our visitors arrived yesterday, so the place looks presentable. DH has mentioned taking down the ceiling again - it was put on hold because he had to have treatment on an infected finger three weeks ago, but I think it will be coming down this week so I can't get out of it! Still, at least we have another room ready enough to move in to until the work is done, so I shall just have to put up with it all.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a great day and (((hugs))) for all those with personal sadnesses this Remembrance Day, in particular Molly's friends, for whom today will be very difficult. I shall be honouring the two minutes silence, but at 12 o'clock because we're an hour ahead here.

    Morning.

Wet and windy here again, 30mph winds this morning, sure to be a rough day. Church first then log fire and roast I hope.

One thing I need to look up. Today is remembrance sunday right. If germany had won WW2 we would all be speaking german. We won, thanks to all those who bravely fought for freedom.......but they make the best cars and goods in the world and our economy is crap. How did that work?

Went to Falmouth on the train for a day out yesterday. Some hefty showers, but found a good pasty and cheap coffee, so it was fine. Bought a GUL hat in the sale for £2, nice bargain.

Well, hope everyone has a good day...... Cheers
NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!

    Morning everyone :hello:

Had a lovely day yesterday. Pottered aroud in the morning and then a friend came over and we took the dogs to the forest. She came back for a coffee and lent me her sewing machine to see how I get on with it. I also had a wander round a few charity shops and picked up delia's Christmas for £1 and the complete set of Malory Towers for the girls for £2.50. Had a quiet night in with OH and Tesco's Dine in for £9 including wine. It was lovely not to cook but not to spend lots on a takeaway either.
Girls are at their grandparents so I will catch up on some housework today, then cook a roast for their return. I'll get to the centotaph for 11am too. Will also make a start on sewing the kitchen blind and making some felt Christmas decorations.
Have been up for an hour and have just read the Cath Kidston catalogue from cover to cover. Think I'll have to leave it open in a prominent place for OH to see
Think I'll make some bread now and another cuppa.

    Enjoy your Sundays everyone

    Haribo x

Edited to add.... Has anyone seen Lamewolf? Hope she's ok. x

    Good morning.

We will be attending the Remembrance Day parade this morning. The TA, Regulars & Army, Air & Sea Cadets all form up, march through town, have the 2 minute silence at the memorial and go to a service in the parish church. The older children were in Army cadets so we used to go then but we all go now as a sign of respect and thanks to all our brave armed forces who have given their lives.

Plans for today are to do some ironing, the usual 2 loads of washing, put it all on the maidens to dry and I want to vac the sofa's

I've woken full of a cold so I'll walk the dogs later to hopefully blow the cobwebs away walk.gifI couldn't resist the smiley!

Lunch is celery soup & a roll and dinner is spaghetti bolognaise. I'm not doing roast dinners too much at the moment as I want our christmas meal to special. I agree with Thriftlady & Diva who I think were mentioning this last week.

I'd better go as Susie, our young Labrador, is stealing various bits of dirty washing from the basket while I'm typing and playing with it. It doesn't take long for her to chew it all up grr.gif

Gentle hugs to anyone who needs one today comforting.gif and I hope you have a good one.

    Morning everyone.

Found yesterdays course a bit draining - it's not pleasant having to discuss the signs and symptoms of abuse in children etc so am rather than that is now out of the way. Watched the Rememberance Concert last night which I found quite emotional (I swear pre kids I never cried at anything.......now the floodgates open at a moments notice ). My BIL was there at the Albert Hall sitting next to Dame Vera Lynn so I think he had a good time chatting to her. He's a history teacher and apparantly got his class to sing "We'll Meet Again" in one lesson. Why weren't my lessons that much fun?!

Anyway got a chicken roasting in the oven for tea. Got to put BM on at some point. think we're going to take the kids for a walk somewhere if the weather stays dry.
Got most of the washing done just waiting for it to dry

Diva - hope the transplant works for Tris - poor bloke has really been through the mill the last few days

Molly - thinking of your DS's friend and his family, especially today xx

Cranky - still thinking of you too xx

Hugs to those that need them.
Have a good Sunday OS or not.

Off to read yesterdays thread. Will attempt to do the 2 mins silence, I hope the kids aren't getting into mischief when it happens.

Remembrance Sunday parade for us too. DH is a scout leader and the kids are both involved, so I tag along as well. Must say that for years I thought Remembrance Sunday was not relevant to me, but as I've got older it all seems so much more important that we remember what happened in the past (and is still happening now) and that our children are made aware of the sacrifices that were made. I think that visitng war cemeteries and the Somme in France has brought home the horror of war for me. Our town has just built a memorial and the saddest thing is that there is a lot of blank space on there just waiting to be filled with new names....

Otherwise, just housework to do, oh, and need to stop one of the chickens (Cheddar) from escaping into next door's garden. I'll have to appease the neigbour with eggs;)

    Morning All

Well the lurgy has finally got me! my throat feels very raw this morning but I'm just hoping as I don't smoke anymore it won't settle into my chest like it has for DH. Anyway at the moment I don't feel too bad so if I plod on today with batch cooking and washing it means an easier life during the week when I have to work!

I was just having a giggle to myself - I stop doing the full sunday roast dinner too so they'll all appreciate the christmas meal! DH thought I was nuts when I first mentioned it and he told his Nanny...who said she did the same thing!!

So I have made some sausage patties ready to cook for brunch today and I have some stewing steak on and some left over cooked chicken so might make Pie, Chips and Peas for dinner today.

I always thought Rememberance Sunday was the sunday after the 11/11 ..must have my wires crossed somewhere!

We sat and watched our first mushy christmas film on TV with the kids yesterday afternoon..it was great and I can't believe how close it's getting! My mum called last night to say she's ordered a bike for DD from Argos (on offer this week) so I have to pick that up today and find somehwere to hide it!

Hope everyone has a peaceful sunday
