Maglite are good as they have very sound bodies and switching mechanisms. Not to mention being waterproof and if they are the C or D cell models great for self defence :)
Idealy it realy depends on how your using it. If it is to walk round and police a secure site, take a 3-4 cell maglite with an LED head. If it is for general walking, working in confined spaces or just where you need your hands free try the petzel range.

  • Personally I have a Maglite 3D LED, which came bundled with a Maglite 2AA LED (incl all batteries!) which I picked up from Costco for about £27 the lot, which is a very good price. It is really practical for what I use it for, and is surprisingly powerful. Although not the best flashlight out there, it is really good (and I am a man of many flashlights!)

Do the LED heads on Maglites give a better light?

  • Can't believe Tesco aren't doing the 3W one anymore, I bought one of these when they were on special offer about 8 quid and it's brilliant. Wish I'd bought a few now :-(

I second the Tesco 3W. Shame they're only doing 1W now.

I'd rate Fenix over Maglite. The only advantage of a large Maglite is a as a legitimate tool for self defence. LED Lenser are OK. I say this as someone with over 400 torches in my collection!

The Tescos 3W torches were very good for the price. Shame they've made such a retrograde step back to 1W.

If you're after a headtorch then look at Scurion, Warmbac Viper and Stenlight (in that order). The Scurion is megabucks.

if you need to use hands while holding a torch, i'd go for a head light.

also have a look at 7dayshop.com, but some of their stuff can be pricey.
