HELP! IKEA - PAX MALM mirrored sliding wardrobe door

Hello - just posting this on the off chance someone can help.

I bought a pair of PAX MALM doors 2 years ago from IKEA - they have been fine but recently the wheel on one has broken (the ball bearings exploded). I have contacted IKEA but they say because it is over 12 months old they have no responsibility to help. They advise buying new doors for £180 - which seems excessive for a broke wheel and not very environmentally friendly!

So I wondered may be if some one has broken the glass in their doors they might be kind enough to send me the wheel before they throw it out. Or may be some one who has purchased in the last 12 months could get a replacement from IKEA on my behalf. (Wheel for item number 40104878)

Or is there somewhere that fixes wheels?

Many thanks if any one can help

Matt

Did you go to the shop or phone the main customer service number? The overall experience in store is pretty poor based on my own experience, the telephone number very helpful.

I'd call the number and tell them you've just bought it and there is a bit missing. I've done this in the past (genuinely) and they have sent out the whole fittings pack again for me without quibble or proof of purchase.

Frankly, the fitting should last more than 2 years, despite their 'warranty' so it might be worth speaking to trading standards to see if you have any recourse that way.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Hasn't Mr Dickerson already done time for fraud?

I agree with phoning customer services. I've also done this but have always been asked for the number on the receipt so they know I genuinely have bought the item and when. Personally I would try as Doozer suggests but if asked, makes an excuse about the receipt being left in your jeans pocket and has done a tour in the washing machine, leaving it unreadable. ;)

Very good! I did ask if I could buy the replacement part since it was beyond the 12 months guarantee but they said no - not their responsibility. Which is the greater fraud?

    The one you're suggesting.

CM, It's not fraud though is it..OP is trying to get a repair for goods provided of non-merchandisable quality that his supplier can't be bothered to supply!

What, goods out of warranty. Get someone else to claim on theirs for the OP's damaged goods. Which part of that isn't?

I thought the pax wardrobes were included in the 10 year guarantee
    Taken from site;
    PAX/KOMPLEMENT

What is covered under this guarantee?
This guarantee covers defects in materials and workmanship in the following components of the PAX/KOMPLEMENT wardrobes and interior fittings described below, and is valid from the date of purchase from IKEA. •Frames •Doors •Hinges •Sliding door mechanism •Drawer gliders •Shelves and clothes rails.

What products are not covered under this guarantee?
KOMPLEMENT wire basket, KOMPLEMENT box in plastic and textile, KOMPLEMENT pull-out shelf in transparent plastic, KOMPLEMENT trouser hanger and KOMPLEMENT shoe organiser.

This says that the sliding door mechanism is included in the guarantee. Personally Id ring them and quote them on this.
If they still wont budge then I would also ring and say the said part is missing from a new product.

Again don't lower yourself and commit a criminal offence.

  • Is it a greater crime than for IKEA to deny their responsibility under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended), and the Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002? (Thanks Doozergirl - I checked the trading standards regulations.)

I have written an email to IKEA quoting the above regulations - we can see where that gets.

If anyone wants to see a picture of the wheel that is causing this whole fuss then it is here. Just the bottom bit - the plastic casing above is fine.

If there is a way of fixing the above wheel (broken ball bearings) - please let me know.

    Is it really?

So you've spoken to some chimp at Ikea who don't know the law. You have rights so sort it in the correct way. Why revert to dishonest tactics to get what you are legally entitled to?
