right, small update on this. he is now being fed only on applaws dry, and while the poops have firmed somewhat, they are still stenchy and a bit squidgy, so i am now thinking that there may be a intolerance to chicken, as that is the only ingredient that has been in all his food! so in my quest for the perfect cat poo i am now going to try JWB, as the turkey and rice flavour has no chicken  wish me luck!

we now have kitten #2, who has completely normal poo *sigh of relief* despite me having to make him go cold turkey on his whiskas pouches cos #1 kept stealing them, you have honestly never seen or smelled anything like the result of that!! i had to trim his trousers cos the slimey poo kept sticking on the fur, the amount of times i was nearly sick over the course of those couple of days!

here are the offending articles relaxing after a long hard day of chasing each other round... the one with the bowel issues is the balinese on the left, he is about 6-7 months old, and the fresh one is the tiny tabby on the right, who is now about 4 months old :)

Glad to hear things have improved somewhat :)

I can't remember what you've already tried now so thought I might throw a couple of others into the mix for you to consider.

Burns is the first one I thought of as their diets ar hypoallergenic and they also have several non-chicken ones ... http://www.shop.burnspet.com/acatalog/Food_For_Cats.html

Then there's Royal Canin. They do an extensive range of foods for different needs, even a diet specifically tailored to Siamese cats which might suit, although bear in mind that it does contain poultry if you discover that is a cause... http://www.royalcanin.co.uk/my_pet/cat_products/feline_breed_nutrition/siamese.aspx

or the one for digestion problems and sensitive tummies, again chicken free... http://www.royalcanin.co.uk/my_pet/cat_products/feline_breed_nutrition/siamese.aspx

I do hope you manage to find something to suit him very soon! Keep us updated! Beautiful kitties :D

Orijen have a six fish variety which is both chicken and grain free, like Applaws.

wow, i had no idea they did breed specific cat food! if the JWB doesnt work out i will try burns next, and then the royal canin if that doesnt work out. i hope the JWB or burns will be suitable, as they are more readily available in my local pet shop, its better for me to be able to spend a few pounds a month than a few more pounds to buy it in bulk or online. i know its silly cos its cheaper to buy in bulk but nevermind!
actually, looking on their website, burns seems to have a higher meat content so may work out cheaper actually, as i've noticed from the JWB samples i put down that they both wolf it down ridiculously fast compared to the applaws, which i assume is probably to do with the meat content!
fire fox, i remember you saying you'd emailed a few companies asking for samples, i dont suppose you remember if burns were nice and willing to send a sample or two?

how strange that you also think your cat is intolerant of chicken, i had never heard of it before a few days ago

i was in the sam situation as you and honestly thought the vet was mad when he said about chicken but i am now on day 4 of the no chicken diet and my billy has done no more mr whippies and no more smellies.
the only problem i have found is the other cats food so now gizzy is on a no chicken diet for now too

Billy is a black and white moggie.

i am now giving salmon and rice flavour purina one and the fishy flavours of feline fayre and encore.

i do plan to change to a better dry food like james well beloved but i was only able to get to tesco after the vets and he seems to be doing well on it anyway.

Yes: Burns, RC, Trophy, Wafcol, HiLife and First Class all sent good sized samples and someone else said they'd had a large sample from Arden Grange. ;) Fish4Cats and JWB both have samples on their websites but were out of stock last time I looked.
