i'll have a look in PAH tomorrow and see if they do that lacto stuff, and will try the applaws again with that. going to have to use up what i've got first though, theres a whole cereal dispenser tub full of it and i havent a hope in hell of separating it out cos it all looks exactly the same!! will try and make more of an effort to stop him eating the boys crumbs in the meantime and see if that helps. a cat that wants to eat crumbs and a child that likes to drop them but is scared of the hoover is not a good combination though!!

I had the hills and applaws mixed together in a tub, was on a 50/50 mix but couldn't stand the smell any longer so once they were fully changed over on the wet i took a risk and gave them just the applaws biscuits.

i have got a whole unopened bag of hills which hopefully i can get a refund on but the opened bag is over half full
plus the mix in the tub to chuck out too

does the hills smell bad then? the applaws doesnt smell particularly pleasant, but it does at least smell meaty.
i'm going to have a look for the lacto stuff or something similar in PAH tomorrow, and i'm going to check the ingredients list for their 65% purely as well cos annoyingly they dont have it on their website!

  • I had my vet check the spec on 'animal probiotics' that he could prescribe and it was exactly the same as human version...so do not spend extra cash on 'pet' versions. Buy from Holland and Barret if you must...it is NOT great quality but should suffice...just check whichever one you choose to make sure there is a HIGH number of bacteria as most will be destroyed by stomach acid. Better quality brands are coated so as to bypass the stomach acid before release

Don't chuck it out!!! Feed it to the hedgehogs!!! ;)

They need all the food they can get right now in preparation for hibernation!

Hills doesn't smell bad, it's very errrm meaty smelling when you grab a handful out the bag though, but it doesn't stink your house out like wet meat does. I noticed the kittens poops firmed up when on hills but that may just be a coincedence, they dont resemble cow pats anymore but they still smell like egg!

    Hi there

Firstly, I know you said that feeding raw isn't an option - so my post isn't going to help much ;) but, my Pixie Bob had awful diarrhea from the day we got him and for about 5 weeks...every single poo! From liquid to Mr Whippy. Vet tested for parasites and stuff - gave him probiotic - Pro Kolin - and put him on Hills i/d wet. No change. Then, because he was so loose he refused to use the tray so did it everywhere else and it stunk! Was at my wits end really until I started reading about raw and decided to try it. Almost immediately he had properly formed, solid stools and has not had diarrhea since. I don't know why but it works for me! :j

I'm not sure of the point of posting this :o but your posts could have been written by me at the time. It's very stressful when you can't work out what's wrong isn't it?

    Good Luck!

The standard Hills is quite high meat content, IIRC over 50%, which obviously leaves less room for 'fillers' so if you feel it's working you may be best to stick with it. There are quite a few hypoallergenic brands of dry food on the market, but Noah has not been impressed by most! I am currently disguising Wafcol - mixed with prebiotic cat milk last night and tuna Feline Fayre this morning! He does like Orijen very much tho.

With regards smelly cat food raw doesn't smell of anything to me, which is partly why I am so bemused that Noah goes mad for it, as the rest of time he likes the stinkiest fish! :p
