Is it no seafood because of allergies, dislikes or because someone eats kosher? Just in case of the latter, my ideas don't mix meat and dairy.

First course: bread, veges and dips: hummus, peanut dip and home made chicken liver pate
Second course: roast lamb with anchovies and rosemary, scalloped potatoes, tomato tarte tatin (will be good for the veges), roast vegetables
Third course: blackberry and apple crumble, thick cream OR apple pie and wensleydale cheese

  • I second the soup idea - most people LOVE homemade soups...

then a nice roast as the maincourse - chicken maybe (simply because everyone likes roast chicken!) served with all the trimmings, or a lasagne and salad (maybe with garlic bread) if you want something that you can put in the oven and forget about

And pudding - A fruit pie or tart that you can show off your baking skills, served with either proper custard or icecream

This is very easy to do and you can dress it up a bit if you want.
Really basic ie jelly, with instant whip, or cream or sweetened greek yohourt. You can obviusly use different colour combinations , add bits of fruit or alchohol, decorate with chocolate curls, hundreds and thousands
Last 2 times I did this I used Orange jelly with cointreau, greek Yog with Limoncello, slice of lemon and orange to decorate with a small chocolate caramel hidden in the yog, other one was strawberry jelly, strawberry instant whip, blob of whipped cream and a strawberry to decorate. you can use any pretty or plain wine glass and make them up first thing in the morning and forget them

For starters I'd have feta cheeseand sliced tomato with a drizzle of olive oil, sercved with crunchy warm rolls
Main course, Chicken breasts with creamy pepper sauce, small roast potatoes and a selection of vegetables.
I wouldn't roast a whole chicken.. all that carving...no I want an easy life when entertaining

I'm going to try Nigella's easy chocolate mousse..anyone else see it last night

  • I have approx 4 hours to spend on prep

Desserts you can make the day before

    Chocolate Truffle Torte

Panna Cotta. You can simply whizz up a coulis a few hours beforehand. Or service with fresh fruit, maybe infused?

  • MM - just wondering any chance you could post up the luxury caulie and the mustard pork recipes? You've got me tempted.

I have 8 confirmed guests and half a meal plan

    Main couse

    choice of steak/chicken griddled with

boiled pots (hopefulle sainsbury will have some more of their orgainics down to 50p a bag)
Orgainic carrots as the taste is great
    buttered mushrooms and baked tomatoes
    frozen peas and corn

    Then dessert choice from either
fruit tart with cream or choc truffle cake with fruit coulis

My guests are bringing bottles so just the starter to sort

I am thinking of an antipasto type platter
Olives, salamis, toms, salad and bread....
