OP have you thought of buying a radio? Its a sort of TV but without the pictures.
Some nice DAB ones around now, not too expensive.
A personal recommendation would be any manufactured by Pure. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
I much prefer the radio myself. The pictures are so much better...No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Thanks for the tips!
I've got five radio's - in the kitchen, bathroom, clock radio's in the bedrooms, one in the car (and I used to have one in the lounge - on the TV)! All of these are analogue and are soon to be rendered useless! And I don't have the money to replace them.
I don't think it reasonable that potentially millions of people will have to replace their currently fully functioning analogue radio's with more expensive digital ones (and many won't be able to afford to do so). And with digital, I guess they'll lose the facility to instantly twiddle the dial to find new and interesting analogue stations from all over the world (and many older people are used to sometimes having weak and 'fizzy' signals and are ok with it).
Plus, similarly to the car scappage scheme, it's likely that millions of radio's will be thrown away to landfil, whilst also depriving future generations of "classic" models.
macman - Thanks for the info - does this mean that my TV will be defunct by next June or earlier? :eek:0 -

No, Freeview HD will not replace Freeview SD, it will be an additional digital platform. Howver if your TV is analogue, it will become defunct whenever your area undergoes digital switchover.
Analogue radio switch off will not be until December 2015-more than 6 years away. If you are receiving foreign stations on Long Wave, you will still be able to receive them on your old analogue radios until such time as they also convert to DAB.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Cheers macman, something to smile about then!0

OP, The analog signal has benn switched off in your area and now you can no longer receive BBC channels. Could you receive them via freeview before the switch over?
If not maybe your aerial needs looking at, have you another digital TV you can use?
Its also possible that the freeview tuner in your TV has been bricked by the recent freeview retune, as posted above, so you may need to buy a new STB.
has only been turned off for bbc2 the last retune on 4/11/09 was so that more people in the granada region winter hill transmiter could get freeview for the first time myself included many people me included cannot get itv ch4 or 5 digital as the winter hill transmitter is not yet on full power untill the 2/12/09 when the remaing 4 anolog channels will be switched of and winter hill will be on full power upto 10 times more and you should then retune the tv and get all the available digi channels.0 -
Thanks richard9991,
I retuned again to see if anything new might happen (you never know) and there are nineteen BBC TV and radio channels (inc the red button and 300/1/2's) listed, but with no signal. Six of these are also repeated again in the listing, for some reason.
According to Stompa's link, above, "The only models that cannot cope with switchover are TX-28DT2 and TX-32DT2 regardless of software version installed)" and mine's the first one. So I doubt whether my TV model will be able to cope with the retune on 2 December. Will have to wait and see!0 -
I think he meant that in December they were going to wind up the power, the multiplex frequencies won't be changing. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Thanks penrhyn,
So it's not a power issue, but a multiplex frequency one? I (along with most of the population, I guess) don't know much about how digital is transmitted or received.
Please could you explain further?0
